VIII.

A Soldier of Napoleon's,

who was a member of the Consular Guard, that made such a famous stand at Marengo against an overwhelming force of Austrians, wrote an account of the battle of Marengo, in which he took part. It was published immediately after the battle. This pamphlet, so rare that it is unknown to many learned students of Napoleon's history, has been translated for immediate publication in MCCLURE'S MAGAZINE. It is a magnificent and stirring narrative, a contribution to Napoleonic literature of almost unequaled interest. IX.
