FOR THE SEVENTH AND EIGHTH SCHOOL YEARS BY A. G. FRADENBURGH, PH.D. PROFESSOR OF HISTORY AND POLITICS, ADELPHI COLLEGE, BROOKLYN, N. Y. HINDS, NOBLE & ELDREDGE 31-33-35 WEST 15TH STREET NEW YORK CITY 606465 C COPYRIGHT, 1913 To the courtesy of owners of copyrighted pictures we are in- Irving Underhill: Picture on page 166. These pictures, and others, are not to be reprinted except by PREFACE SEVEN years have passed since "American Civics" was published. That book was designed to serve as a textbook for high schools, normal schools, and academies, and as such it received a more cordial welcome than could have been anticipated. But, to the surprise of its author and publishers, "American Civics" was also used to a very considerable extent in grammar schools. The present volume has been prepared with a view to meeting more closely the requirements of grammar schools. While essentially a new work, it has been the author's aim to preserve the features which caused "American Civics" to be kindly received, and to add such new material as the changes in the past few years have made desirable. The larger work will still be useful in the hands of the teacher, as it contains suggestions and reading references which it was not thought necessary to include in this book. A. G. FRADENBURGH.
