Star Table.

From the times of the upper transit of the Pole Star may be derived, with the aid of the following Table, the times of culmination, and of the rising and setting of the principal fixed stars, as seen from the parallel of 45° north latitude.

To ascertain when any star found in the following Table will be on the meridian, add the number in the lefthand column of figures to the preceding meridian transit of the pole star given in the calendar. To find the time of rising of the star, subtract the number opposite to it in the right-hand column of figures from the time of its meridian passage. For the setting of a star, add the same number to the time of its meridian passage. Those stars marked (........) revolve in a circle of perpetual apparition, and do not rise or set at places in and to the north of latitude 45°.

In the year 1900 there will be three eclipses, two of the sun and one of the moon :

I. A total eclipse of the sun, 1900, May 28th, visible in Canada as a partial eclipse.

At WINNIPEG the eclipse begins May 28th, 7h. 1m. 36s. a.m. Greatest obscuration 7h. 58m. 12s. Eclipse
ends 8h. 57m. 4s., 90th meridian time-position, angle; direct image for beginning, N. 230° E., or
the angle from vertex of sun's limb, 274°. Magnitude of eclipse, 0·515 (sun's diameter = 1.0).
TORONTO, the eclipse begins May 28th, 7h. 51m. 40s. a.m. Greatest obscuration 9h. Om. 37s. Eclipse
ends 10h. 17m. 1s., 75th meridian time-position, angle; direct image for beginning, N. 246° E., or
from vertex of sun's limb, 297°. Magnitude of eclipse, 0-810 (sun's diameter = 10).
HALIFAX, the eclipse begins May 28th, Sh. 49m. 5s. a.m. Greatest obscuration 10h. 7m. 28s. Eclipse
ends, 11h. 32m. 42s. Halifax local mean time-position, angle; direct image for beginning, N. 254° E.,
or from vertex of sun's limb, 303°. Magnitude of eclipse, 0.937 (sun's diameter=10).

II.-A partial eclipse of the moon, 1900, June 12th; moon enters shadow 22h. 24m.; middle of eclipse 22h. 28m.; moon leaves shadow 22h. 32m. Eastern standard time. Magnitude of eclipse=0.001; moon's diameter=10. III.-An annular eclipse of the sun, 1900, November 21st, invisible in Canada.

The path of the total eclipse of the sun on May 28th traverses Mexico, a portion of the northern part of the Gulf of Mexico-diagonally across the Southern States, across the Atlantic Ocean between the 40th and 50th parallel of latitude, thence nearly central through Spain, and skirting the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea to a point west of the Red Sea.
