Ordered, That the said petitions be severally referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

Mr. Smilie presented a petition of William Blackney, of the state of Pennsylvania, praying to be placed on the pension list of the United States, in consideration of wounds and injuries received whilst a soldier in the revolutionary war.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee of Claims.

Mr. Tallmadge presented a petition of Abraham Whipple, of the state of Ohio, praying relief in consideration of losses, wounds and injuries sustaincd whilst an officer in the naval service of the United States during the revolutionary war.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to Mr. Tallmadge, Mr. Desha, and Mr. Pickman, to examine the matter thereof and report the same, with their opinion thereon, to the House.

On motion,

Ordered, That Mr. Macon and Mr. Dana be added to the committee appointed on the eleventh instant, for the purpose of inquiring what ammendments are necessary in the "act to promote the pro. gress of useful arts."

Mr. Crawford, from the joint committee for enrolled bills, reported, that the committee did, this day, present to the President of the United States, for his approbation, an enrolled bill, intitled "An act for the relief of William and Elias Rector."

On motion of Mr. J. Porter,

Ordered, That the petition of John Dutill, presented on the first of June, one thousand eight hundred and nine, be referred to the Committee of Claims.

On motion of Mr. Whitehill,

Ordered, That the petition of John Heap, presented on the twelfth of April, one thousand eight hundred and eight, be referred to the same committee.

On motion of Mr. R. Jackson, junior,

Ordered, That the petition of Robert S. Borough, and Stephen Hopkins, of Providence, in Rhode Island, presented on the sixteenth of February, one thousand eight hundred and eight, be referred to the Committee of Commerce and Manufactures.

The House proceeded to consider the unfinished business of yesterday.

The question depending at the time of adjourn ment, to wit: to postpone indefinitely the farther consideration of the joint resolution from the Senate respecting our foreign relations, was again stated; And after farther debate thereon,

The several orders of the day were farther postponed until to-morrow.

And then the House adjourned until to morrow morning, eleven o'clock.

FRIDAY, December 29, 1809.

Another member, to wit; from North Carolina, James Holland, appeared and took his seat in the House.

Mr. Lewis presented a petition of the levy court, of the county of Alexandria, and of the common council of the town of Alexandria, in the district of Columbia, praying a grant of money sufficient for the erection of a permanent jail in the said county for the safe keeping of prisoners.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee for the District of Columbia.

Mr. Taylor, from the commit ee appointed on the eighth instant, to inquire into the circumstances attending the occurrence alluded to in the letter of Mr. I. A. Coles, made a report thereon, which was read and ordered to lie on the table.

The House again proceeded to the consideration of the unfinished business of yesterday.

SATURDAY, December 30, 1809.

Mr. Sinilie presented a petition of sundry inhabi tants of Alleghany county, state of Maryland, and of Somerset and Fayette counties, state of Pennsylvania, whose names are thereunto subscribed, praying the establishment of a post route, to pass on Braddock's old road, from Cumberland, in Maryland, to Union town, in Pennsylvania.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee on Post-offices and Post-roads.

A motion was made by Mr. Dawson, and seconded, that the report made yesterday, on the occurrence between I. A. Coles and a member of this House, and the documents accompanying the same, be printed for the use of the members.

And the question being taken thereon,

Ordered, That the petition of Lewis Dubois, presented on the eleventh of March, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-four, be referred to the Committee of Claims.

Mr. Cochran presented a petition of sundry inhabitants of Guilford county, state of North Carolina, whose names are thereunto subscribed, praying, that the post-route between Hillsborough and Salisbury, maybe so altered as to pass by Greensborough, Jamestown and Lexington, all in the said state.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee on Post-offices and Post-roads.

Mr. Smilie presented a petition of Alexander M'Donald, messenger to the office of the register of the Treasury, praying to be allowed an additional compensation in consideration of the increase of the duties attached to the station of messenger aforesaid.

Ordered, That the said petition be referred to the Committee of Ways and Means.
