period, from September 22, 1922, to December 31, 1927, inclusive, for which data are available.

Since the numbering of the tables of imports for consumption corresponds with the numbering of the paragraphs of the tariff act of 1922, it has not been considered necessary, except in a few special instances, to insert cross references. For instance, Table 916 includes all imports of cotton hosiery such as are now dutiable under paragraph 916. It does not, however, include imports of cotton hosiery ornamented with lace, embroidery, etc., and available data as to these are shown in secondary tables under Table 1430-I since all lace, embroidery, etc., and articles ornamented therewith are now dutiable under paragraph 1430.

It will be noted that Table 1430, which shows the total imports of laces, embroideries, etc., such as are now dutiable under paragraph 1430 of the tariff act of 1922, is placed in the appendix. This is due to the fact that it includes metal thread laces, etc., which in material of chief value are more closely related to metals than to any of the textile materials. Table 1430 is the total of Table 1430-I (laces, etc., of cotton), Table 1430-J (laces, etc., of vegetable fiber other than cotton), 1430-K (laces, etc., of wool or hair), 1430-Ls (laces, etc., of silk), 1430-Lr (laces, etc., of artificial silk or rayon), and 1430-C (laces, etc., of tinsel, wire, lame, bullions, or metal threads). Each of the first five of these secondary tables is shown in the body of the tabulation, in the particular section dealing with other merchandise made of the same material, but Table 1430-C can not be listed with any of the textile schedule groups and is therefore put in the appendix after Table 1430.

The make-up of this statistical tabulation is given in the table of contents. At the end of the work there is shown an index by paragraphs, and an index by articles, of textile imports for consumption. By the use of these the location of statistics of imports for consumption relating to any particular paragraph number of the act of 1922 or to any particular article can be readily ascertained.

These tables were compiled by Miss Blanche C. Howlett, statistical clerk, under the direction of W. A. Graham Clark, chief, of the textile division of the United States Tariff Commission. Assistance was also rendered by Special Experts D. W. Alexander, T. P. Hayden, O. B. Ryder, and G. M. Youngman of the textile division. The statistica' division assisted in making and checking computations.
