On the question-"Shall the amendments be engrossed, and the bill read a third time, as amended?"

It was determined in the affirmative.

The Senate proceeded to consider their amendments disagreed to by the House of Representatives to the bill entitled "An act supplementary to the act to provide additional revenues for defraying the expenses of government and maintaining the public credit, by laying a direct tax upon the United States, and to provide for assessing and collecting the same."

Whereupon,

The bill authorizing the sale of lots owned by

the United States, in the city of New-Orleans, and for other purposes, having been reported by the committee correctly engrossed, was read a third time.

The Senate resumed, as in committee of the whole, the consideration of the bill entitled "An act for the relief of a company of the twentieth brigade of Virginia militia, commanded by captain Jonathan Walmsley." Mr. Varnum was requested to take the chair, and no amendment having been proposed, the President resumed the chair, and the bill was reported to the House.

Ordered, That it pass to a third reading.

Mr. Lacock, from the committee to whom was referred the bill entitled "An act making an appropriation for enclosing and improving the public square near the Capitol, and to abolish the office of commissioners of the public buildings, and of superintendent, and for the appointment of one commissioner for the public buildings," reported it with amendments, which were read.
