(Inspired by Memorial Services of No. 16.) When Life's final page has been printed And the colors have thoroughly dried, When the chases of steel have been polished And stacked on the floor side by side, We shall then take a long intermission

And the blessing of sleep we shall woo, Till Man's Friend, the Master Mechanic, Shall give us some new work to do.

Then those who have made good impressions, Although in a poor, feeble way,

Will journey up higher for lessons

They neglected while yet in the clay;

And the Master, aware of our weakness,
Will not add to our burden of blame

If we failed to quite copy His imprint
As children of one common name.

Let us strive, then, to make good impressions,
For these are the things that survive

In the hearts of the friends left behind us,
Like nectar obtained from the hive;
For, when Life's last page has been printed,
Full many a type will not show,

But the Master, in infinite goodness,
Will make perfect all letters, I know.
Chicago, Ill.

WILLIAM ARTHUR BLACKWELL.

CHRISTMAS.

In olden days, when ma was young,
And father went to see her,
Each girl would hang her stocking up,
For fear Old Kriss would miss her.

The boys would play their pranks, of course—
Put turnips in, or something worse-
But 'way down in the toe would be
A pretty gift from him to she.

Now they set a plate or two,

And Father writes a check or two.
In the olden days, on Christmas eve,
The church was opened up,
And two tall cedars graced the aisles,
Each lighted to the top.

The choir would sing the glad refrain,
And all would at the chorus strain;
Of Bethlehem the preacher prayed,
How in the manger Christ was laid.

Now they sing a line or two,
The pastor says a word or two.

In olden days the reindeer

Sped o'er the chimney top,

Checking his flight at the good boy's house
While Kriss left off a lot.

The bells clanged forth a merry sound;
The universe with joy'd abound;
Gay youth went forth to greet their kin,
And all with goodness seemed fenced in.
Now it's "Pa, I know you're it;
Come across a little bit."

Though we have a Christmastide,
And all the world reveres it,
Haven't modern furbelows

To some extent disfigured it?
Washington, D. C.

CHARLES ALBERT BREWTON.

THE OLD PRESS.

Why do printshops change their ways
And shame my gait of former days?
I meekly yielded to every "pull"
And "stood" for every kind of "bull,"
Often, too, a false "impression,"
And e'en ye editor's digression.

How frequent! O, I scorn to think,
Of "monks" and "friars" in the ink-
How "balls" were smeared by "devil's" dab,
Or roller "streaked" upon the slab,

My "bed" oft burdened with strange "forms"-
I bore the might of pressman's arms-
How oft, I smile, I "strained" his back
Or held "my own" as "galley rack."
By cruel jab of bodkin crush
My "cheeks" were often made to blush.
My "platen" held the "mallet," plainer-
"Quoins," "quads," "pi," I was sustainer-
From here the printer grabbed his "pick"-
He there found "awl" to "shooting stick."
Now I'm covered o'er with dust,
My "bed" sore pitted deep with rust.

My "legs" still stanch, long ceased to ache-
(Will I ever squeeze another "take"?)
Each hundred years they trot me out.

The people guy, and jeer, and shout

The "smart' ones squint, "You look played out."

Right here I'm forced to show my "gall"-
Am I not the hero of them all?

I brought the ages out of gloom

And hastened old King Craft's doom.
Big Goss, big Hoe, why pass me by?
Do your part as well as I-
Speak brave truths for all to hear,
The Destiny of Man is near
When he will not his brother fear,
And Peace throughout the Earth appear.
Leave warlike pranks to boasters vain,
Or I will surely come again!
