I have read many an article in THE JOURNAL which mentioned the "tramp" printer and discussed him in a more or less jocular or sympathetic vein, but so far I have not heard of a writer who has presented the view I held as to his status in the union. The "home guard" and situation holder, who grudgingly "digs up" for the tourist when he drifts into the office, does not realize that but for such restless pioneers wandering heedlessly from town to town, carrying the principles of a square deal even to the smallest hamlet, there would be no scale of prices, no eight hours and no International Typographical Union. Had it not been for these itinerant "agitators" carrying the gospel of unionism and disseminating it by word of mouth all over the world we could never have formed our present powerful and famous organization. Suppose every printer had remained at home and held a steady job, and trusted to the mails as a means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the trade, how far would we have advanced by now? It was the tramp printer who taught the apprentice how to "space out," sent him to the opposition office for italic spaces, introduced the latest methods of imposition-especially in borrowing tobacco-and initiated the unguarded visitor into the mysteries of "type lice." Many a tourist has more than paid for his "hand-out" with some piece of information that has saved the proprietor many a dollar. The very name "journeyman" is an evidence of the value placed in the past upon the benefits of travel to the learner. I believe that all locals should literally make a journeyman of a new member by compelling him to serve the last year of his apprenticeship "on the road." It might take away some of his self esteem, at least. Most of our successful members have been tourists and some of them have even acknowledged to having "hoboed it" at times in their careers. During strikes the first one to walk out and the last to return has been the tourist. Yet he probably did not have the resources and credit of the "home guard." Our history shows that the tramp printer seldom "rats." When he settled down and began to settle up the tourist usually made a good citizen and almost invariably a valuable "hand." Just imagine how many situations-even yours-might become vacant if the "traveler" was to take your wellmeant advice and hold a steady job. Best let him pursue his harmless, happy way, helped on by your donated dime. GEORGE, PARKE. Memphis, Tenn. A SUPPRESSED resolve will betray itself in the eyes.-George Eliot.
