Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε τῷ εἰπόντι αὐτῷ Τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου, καὶ τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ ἀδελφοί μου· But he answered and said unto him that told him, a Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? a He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me, Matt. x. 37. Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant, Deut. xxxiii. 9. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? Mark iii. 32, 33. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man, Luke ii. 49. 52. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come, John ii. 3, 4. Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more, 2 Cor. v. 16. VER. 49. For whosoever shall a do the will of my Father which is in heaven, b the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. A. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren, Rom. viii. 29. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one : for which cause, he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the Church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people, Heb. ii. 11-17. CHAP. XIII. VER. 1. Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐξελθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκίας, ἐκάθητο παρὰ τὴν θά λασσαν. The same day went Jesus out of the house, and a sat by the sea side. a And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them, Mark ii. 13. And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land, iv. 1. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship, Luke v. 3. VER. 3. D. 31. which was spoken by the prophet, say- a And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto iii. 23. And he taught them many them in parables? He answered and things by parables, and said unto them said unto them, Because it is given in his doctrine, iv. 2. And he said unto you to know the mysteries of the unto them, Know ye not this parable? kingdom of heaven, but to them it is and how then will ye know all panot given. For whosoever hath, to rables? 13. And with many such him shall be given, and he shall have parables spake he the word unto them, more abundance: but whosoever hath as they were able to hear it, 33. And not, from him shall be taken away he began to speak unto them by paeven that he hath. Therefore speak Irables. A certain man planted a vineto them in parables: because they yard, and set an hedge about it, and seeing see not; and hearing they hear digged a place for the winefat, and not, neither do they understand, Matt. built a tower, and let it out to husxiii. 10-13. All these things spake bandmen, and went into a far country, Jesus unto the multitude in parables; xii. 1. And they sought to lay hold on and without a parable spake he not him, but feared the people: for they unto them that it might be fulfilled knew that he had spoken the parable A. D. 31. MATT. XIII. 3-6. against them and they left him, and went their way, 12. And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand, Luke viii. 10. Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? xii. 41. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father, John xvi. 25. b Hearken, Behold, there went out a sower to sow: And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it wither ed away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear, Mark iv. 3-9. A sower went out to sow his seed and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear, Luke viii. 5-8. A. D. 31. the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side, Matt. xiii. 18, 19. VER. 5. “Αλλα δὲ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὰ πετρώδη ὅπου οὐκ εἶχε γῆν πολλήν· καὶ εὐθέως ἐξανέτειλε, dià To μn Exel Bábos yñç. they had not much earth: and forthwith Some fell upon a stony places, where they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: a But he that received the seed into heareth the word, and anon with joy stony places, the same is he that receiveth it, Matt. xiii. 20. And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I their flesh, and will give them an will take the stony heart out of heart of flesh, Ezek. xi. 19. A new heart also will I give you, and a new will take away the stony heart out of spirit will put within you: and I your flesh, and I will give you an made their hearts as an adamant heart of flesh, xxxvi. 26. Yea, they stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts, Zech. vii. 12. VER. 6. Ηλίου δὲ ἀνατείλαντος, ἐκαυματίσθη· καὶ, διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν ῥίζαν, ἐξηράνθη. And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and b because they had no root, they withered away. a Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended, ver. 21. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth shall receive the crown of life, which temptation for when he is tried, he the Lord hath promised to them that love him, Jam. i. 11, 12. : b And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, 1 shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it, Matt. vii. 26, 27. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away, Luke viii. 13. Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus, Col. i. 28. Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving, ii. 7. VER. 7. *Αλλα δὲ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὰς ἀκάνθας, καὶ ἀνέβησαν αἱ ἄκανθαι, καὶ ἀπέπνιξαν αὐτά. And some fell a among thorns; and the thorns sprung up and choked them: a He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful, ver. 22. For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings, Jer. iv. 3, 4. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful, Mark iv. 18, 19. VER. 8. Αλλα δὲ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν τὴν καλὴν, nai édidov napπòv, ô μèv ixatòv, ô dè égńκοντα,ὃ δὲ τριάκοντα. A. D. 31. some thirty, ver. 23. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience, Luke viii. 15. b Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him, Gen. xxvi. 12. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples, John xv. 8. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law, Gal. v. 22, 23. Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God, Phil. i. 11. VER. 9. Who a hath ears to hear, let him hear. Καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ, εἶπον αὐτῷ· Διατί ἐν παραβολαῖς λαλεῖς αὐτοῖς ; And the disciples came, and said unto him, a Why speakest thou unto them in parables? a And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable, Mark iv. 10. And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples, 33, 34. VER. 11. Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ὅτι ὑμῖν δέδοται γνῶναι τὰ μυστήρια τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν, ἐκείνοις δὲ οὐ δέδοται. He answered and said unto them, a Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. a At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because But other fell into a good ground, and thou hast hid these things from the brought forth fruit, some an hundred-wise and prudent, and hast revealed fold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. a But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight, Matt. xi. 25, 26. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my A. D. 31. MATT. XIII. 11. Father which is in heaven, xvi. 17. Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way, Ps. xxv.8,9. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant, 14. The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel, Isa. xxix. 19. And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called, The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein, xxxv. 8. And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables, Mark iv. 11. And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand, Luke viii. 10. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her, x. 39-42. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself, John vii. 17. And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul, Acts. xvi. 14. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few, xvii. 11, 12. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, A. D. 31. nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God, 1 Cor. ii. 9, 10. For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? iv. 7. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him, Jam. i. 5. not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures, 16-18. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him, 1 John ii. 27. Do b Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, Rom. xvi. 25. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory, 1 Cor. ii. 7. Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God, iv. 1. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge? and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing, xiii. 2. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, xv. 51. Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself, Ephes. i. 9. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the Church, v. 32. And for me, |
