The Senate proceeded to consider the resolution submitted by Mr. Metcalfe, the 8th instant, in relation to the settlement of the claims of R. M. Johnson; and the resolution was agreed to.

The two bills and three joint resolutions received from the House of Representatives for concurrence, the 9th instant, were read the first and second times by unanimous consent.

R. 759 be referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims; that the joint resolution numbered H. R. 49 be referred to the Committee on the Judiciary; and that the resolution numbered H. The Senate proceeded to consider, as in Committee of the Whole, the resolution (H. R. 50) for the relief of John B. Nevitt, of Adams county, Mississippi; and no amendment being made, it was reported to the Senate.

The Senate proceeded to consider, as in Committee of the Whole, the bill (H. The Vice President presented the proceedings of the chamber of commerce of New York in favor of appropriations for continuing the operations of the coast survey.

On motion by Mr. Davis, of Mississippi, Ordered, That they be printed.

Mr. Corwin presented a petition of citizens of Toledo, Ohio, praying the establishment of a reciprocal free trade in certain articles of agricultural production between the United States and Canada:

Ordered, That it lie on the table.

Mr. Greene presented the petition of Samuel S. Bartlett, praying that bounty land and extra pay may be allowed to that portion of the marine corps which served in California during the Mexican war; which was referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Mr. Hamlin presented a petition of citizens of Lincoln county, Maine, praying that the rates of postage may be reduced and the franking privilege abolished:

Mr. Davis, of Massachusetts, presented a memorial of the insurance companies of Boston, Massachusetts, praying that the operations of the coast survey may be continued under the existing arrangements for the prosecution of that work:

Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the propriety of authorizing the Commissioner of the General Land Office to purchase five hundred copies of "White's New Recopilacion."

Mr. Breese submitted the following resolution for consideration: Resolved, That the report, of the Commissioner of the General Land Office under date of February 11, 1849, be printed with the annual report of said Commissioner as an appendix to the same; and that three thousand extra copies of his last annual report, with the appendix, be printed for the use of the Senate, five hundred copies thereof for the use of the General Land Office.

Mr. Westcott, by unanimous consent, asked and obtained leave to bring in a bill (S. 460) to extend an act herein mentioned; which was read the first and second times by unanimous consent, and, with an accompanying document, referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

H. R. 52. Joint resolution relative to evidence in applications for pensions by widows of deceased soldiers under the act of July 21, 1848; in which they request the concurrence of the Senate.

The resolution last mentioned was read the first and second times by unanimous consent:

To amend the bill by inserting, section 1, page 24, line 585, the following:

"To reimburse the corporation of Washington the cost of erecting the half of the city hall building, granted to and occupied by the government for the circuit, district, and criminal courts of the United States, thirty thousand dollars, the same to be expended by the said corporation in finishing the exterior of the said building, under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury; Provided, That rooms enough be set apart for the use of the United States in the District of Columbia, the Secretary of the Treasury to be the judge as to the sufficiency of the rooms so provided." It was determined in the affirmative,
