Mr. Walker presented a petition of registers and receivers of public lands in the State of Wisconsin, praying that commissions may be allowed them on all entries of military land warrants; which was referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

Mr. Downs submitted documents relating to the claim of Joseph Walker to the confirmation of his title to a tract of land; which were referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims.

Mr. Downs presented the petition of Joshua Holden, praying to be allowed the right of pre-emption to a tract of land; which was referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims.

Mr. Clarke presented the petition of the heirs of William Barton, deceased, late an officer in the revolutionary army, praying to be allowed arrears of pension; which was referred to the Committee on Pensions.

Mr. Dickinson presented the petition of William C. Sterrett, praying to be allowed a pension in consideration of injuries received while in the naval service of the United States; which was referred to the Committee on Pensions.

Mr. Bradbury presented the petition of Benjamin Stinson, praying compensation for the use of his vessel by the government as a storeship; which was referred to the Committee of Claims.

Mr. Hamlin presented a petition of citizens of Maine, praying the establishment of a mail route from Lewiston falls to Topham, in that State; which was referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

Mr. Breese presented a petition of citizens of Illinois, praying the establishment of a mail route from Galatia, in Saline county, to Mount Hawkins, in Perry county, in that State; which was referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

Mr. Breese presented the petition of Mary Hassell, widow of Benjamin Hassell, praying to be allowed a pension; which was referred to the Committee on Pensions.

Mr. Breese presented the petition of Ruth Kerr, widow of a revolutionary soldier, praying to be allowed a pension; which was referred to the Committee on Pensions.

Mr. Cameron presented two petitions of citizens of Columbia county, Pennsylvania, praying a modification of the existing tariff; which were referred to the Committee on Finance.

Mr. Davis, of Massachusetts, presented the petition of Thomas M. Taylor, a purser in the navy, praying to be released from liabilities for certain moneys which were lost in consequence of the failure of the bank in which they were deposited; which was referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Mr. Johnson, of Maryland, presented the memorial of John S. Shriver, president of certain steamboat companies engaged in the coasting trade, praying to be relieved from certain charges imposed by the act of 1793; which was referred to the Committee on Com

merce.

Mr. Davis, of Massachusetts, presented the petition of Charles Colburn, praying compensation for his services as a yeoman in the navy; which was referred to the Committee of Claims.

Mr. Dix presented the petition of Charles M. Keller and others, in behalf of a convention of inventors, praying that certain defects in the patent laws may be remedied; which was referred to the Committee on Patents and the Patent Office.

Mr. Rusk presented the petition of Samuel Colt, praying that he may be authorized by law to furnish repeating fire-arms for the use of the government; which was referred to the Committee on Military Affairs, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Johnson, of Louisiana, presented the petition of Joseph Reynes, praying the confirmation of his title to a certain tract of land; which was referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims. On motion by Mr. Upham,

Mr. Breese submitted the following resolution, which was considered by unanimous consent, and agreed to:

Resolved, That the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads be instructed to inquire into the expediency of establishing a post route from Kane, in Greene county, in the State of Illinois, to Witt's mill, or Jalapa, in the same county.

Mr. Dickinson submitted the following resolution, which was considered by unanimous consent, and agreed to:

Resolved, That the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads be instructed to inquire into the expediency of providing for the advertising of mail lettings by contract, affording full and fair opportunity for competition.

Mr. Westcott submitted the following resolution, which was considered by unanimous consent, and agreed to:

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Treasury communicate to the Senate such information as he may have relative to the expediency of repealing or modifying the act of June 30, 1834, concerning tonnage duty on Spanish vessels.

Mr. Niles submitted the following resolution for consideration: Resolved, That the Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses of the Senate be instructed to inquire into the construction and effect of the resolution of the Senate, adopted at the last session, in relation to reporting and publishing the debates of the Senate, and whether any modification thereof is required; and that said committee also ascertain the expense which has been incurred under said resolution since its adoption.

The Senate resumed the consideration of the resolution, submitted by Mr. Westcott the 19th of April last, concerning tonnage duty on Spanish vessels; and the resolution having been modified on the motion of Mr. Westcott, was agreed to, as follows:

Resolved, That the Committee on Finance be instructed to in- · quire into the expediency of repealing "an act concerning tonnage duty on Spanish vessels," passed June 30, 1834, or modifying the said act so as to allow Spanish vessels from Cuba to trade between that island and any port of the United States upon the same footing, as to tonnage duties, as vessels of other foreign countries. are allowed to trade between the ports of their country and the ports of the United States.

The Senate proceeded to consider the report of the select committee, made the 1st of August last, on the expediency of publishing the results of Colonel Frémont's exploring expedition to California; and,
