a Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded ?

a From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not, Jam. iv. 1, 2.

a Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

VER. 2. Οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἅγιοι τὸν κόσμον κριτ καὶ εἰ ἐν ὑμῖν κρίνεται ὁ κόσμος, νοῦσι ; ἀνάξιοί ἐστε κριτηρίων ἐλαχίστων

VER. 3.

Οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἀγγέλους κρινοῦμεν ; that your brethren. μήτι γε βιωτικά ;

Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

VER. 4.

Βιωτικὰ μὲν οὖν κριτήρια ἐὰν ἔχητε, τοὺς ἐξουθενημένους ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ, τούτους καθίζετε.

If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.

VER. 5.

Πρὸς ἐντροπὴν ὑμῖν λέγω. Οὕτως οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ὑμῖν σοφὸς οὐδὲ εἷς, ὃς δυνήσεται διακρῖναι ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὑτοῦ;

I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

a For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God, Eph. v. 5. See also on Rom. i. ver. 18.

VER. 10.

Οὔτε κλέπται, οὔτε πλεονέκται, οὔτε

μέθυσοι, οὐ λοίδοροι, οὐχ ἅρπαγες, βασιλείαν Θεοῦ οὐ κληρονομήσουσι.

Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

VER. 11.

Καὶ ταῦτά τινες ἦτε· ἀλλὰ ἀπελούσασθε, ἀλλὰ ἡγιάσθητε, ἀλλὰ ἐδικαιώθητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν.

b But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak. For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend, 1 Cor. viii. 9— 13. Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the Gospel of Christ,

ix. 12. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols; eat not, for his sake that shewed it and for conscienoe sake: for the

earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience? For, if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of, for that for which I give thanks? Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved, x. 28-33. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. Let not then your good be evil spoken of: For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink : but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may, edify another. For meat destroy not the work of God. things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin, Rom. xiv. 15-23.

Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. a Now the body is not for fornication, b but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

VER. 14.

And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.

Ἡ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ὁ κολλώμενος τῇ πόρνη, ἓν σῶμά ἐστιν ; Ἔσονται γὰρ, φησὶν, οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν.

What! a know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

VER. 17.

Ο δὲ κολλώμενος τῷ Κυρίῳ, ἓν πνεῦμά ἐστι.

* But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

aThat they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me, John xvii. 21. I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one, 23. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones, Eph. v. 30.

VER. 18.

Φεύγετε τὴν πορνείαν. Πᾶν ἁμάρτημα ὃ ἐὰν ποιήσῃ ἄνθρωπος, ἐκτὸς τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν· ὁ δὲ πορνεύων εἰς τὸ ἴδιον σῶμα ἁμαρτάνει.

a Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

What! a a know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

VER. 20.

Ηγοράσθητε γὰρ τιμῆς· δοξάσατε δὴ τὸν Θεὸν ἐν τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐν τῷ πνεύματι ὑμῶν, ἅτινά ἐστι τοῦ Θεοῦ.

a For ye are bought with a price: btherefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

a Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men, 1 Cor. vii. 23. Feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood, Acts xx. 28. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them and rose again, 2 Cor. v. 14, 15. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, 1 Pet. i. 18, 19. VER. 14.

Ἡγίασται γὰρ ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ ἄπιστος ἐν τῇ γυναικί· καὶ ἡγίασται ἡ γυνὴ ἡ ἄπιστος ἐν τῷ ἀνδρὶ· ἐπεὶ ἄρα τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν ἀκάθαρτά ἐστι· νῦν δὲ ἅγιά ἐστιν.

For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

VER. 15.

Εἰ δὲ ὁ ἄπιστος χωρίζεται, χωριζέσθω· οὐ δεδούλωται ὁ ἀδελφὸς ἢ ἡ ἀδελφὴ ἐν τοῖς τοιούτοις· ἐν δὲ εἰρήνῃ κέκληκεν ἡμᾶς ὁ Θεός.

But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: a but God hath called us * to peace.

VER. 16.

Τί γὰρ οἶδας, γύναι, εἰ τὸν ἄνδρα σώ σεις; Ἢ τί οἶδας, ἄνερ, εἰ τὴν γυναῖκα σώσεις ;

VER. 19.

Η περιτομὴ οὐδέν ἐστι, καὶ ἡ ἀκριβυ στία οὐδέν ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ τήρησις ἐντολῶν Θεοῦ.

a Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

Εἰ μὴ ἑκάστῳ ὡς ἐμέρισεν ὁ Θεὸς, ἕκαστον ὡς κέκληκεν ὁ Κύριος, οὕτω περιπατείτω. Καὶ οὕτως ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις πά σαις διατάσσομαι.

But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.

VER. 18. Περιτετμημένος τις ἐκλήθη; μὴ ἐπι σπάσθω. Ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ τις ἐκλήθη; μὴ περιτεμνέσθω.

28. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free : but Christ is all, and in all, Col. iii. 11. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear: not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward, 1 Pet. ii. 18.

VER. 21.

εἰ καὶ δύνασαι ἐλεύθερος γενέσθαι, μᾶλλον Δοῦλος ἐκλήθης ; μή σοι μελέτων αλλ' χρῆσαι.

Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest he made free, use it rather.

VER. 22.

Ὁ γὰρ ἐν Κυρίῳ κληθεὶς δοῦλος, ἀπελεύ. Is any man called being circumcised ? θερος Κυρίου ἐστιν· ὁμοίως καὶ ὁ ἐλεύθερος let him not become uncircumcised. Is | κληθεις, δοῦλός ἐστι Χριστοῦ.
