1 COR. XII. 7-14.

And he gave some, apostles; and terpreter, let him keep silence in the some, prophets; and some, evange-church; and let him speak to himself, lists; and some, pastors and teach- and to God, 1 Cor. xiv. 27, 28. ers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, Eph. iv. 11, 12.

VER. 8.

*Ωι μὲν γὰρ διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος δίδοται λόγος σοφίας, ἄλλῳ δὲ λόγος γνώσεως, και τὰ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα·

For to one is given by the Spirit, the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

a The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning; he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned, Isa. 1. 4. And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding, Dan. ii. 21.

VER. 9.

Ετέρῳ δὲ πίστις, ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ Πνεύματι· ἄλλῳ δὲ χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων, ἐν τῷ αὐ τῷ Πνεύματι

VER. 11.

Πάντα δὲ ταῦτα ἐνεργεῖ τὸ ἓν καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα, διαιροῦν ἰδίᾳ ἑκάστῳ καθὼς βούλεται.

a But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

a John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven, John iii. 27. But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you, 2 Cor. x. 13.

VER. 12.

Καθάπερ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα ἓν ἐστι, καὶ μέλη ἔχει πολλὰ, πάντα δὲ τὰ μέλη τοῦ σώματος τοῦ ἑνὸς, πολλὰ ὄντα, ἕν ἐστι σῶμα· οὕτω καὶ ὁ Χριστός.

VER. 10.

Αλλῳ δὲ ἐνεργήματα δυνάμεων, ἄλλῳ δὲ προφητεία, ἄλλῳ δὲ διακρίσεις πνευμάτων, ἑτέρῳ δὲ γένη γλωσσῶν, ἄλλῳ δὲ ἑρμηνεία γλωσσῶν·

To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; eto another the interpretation of tongues:

εἴτε Ελληνες, εἴτε δοῦλοι, εἴτε ἐλεύθεροι· καὶ πάντες εἰς ἓν Πνεῦμα ἐποτίσθημεν.

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, b whether we be Jews or * Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; 4 and have been all made to drink into

one Spirit.

VER. 14.

Καὶ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα οὐκ ἔστιν ἓν μέλος, ἀλλὰ πολλά.

Καὶ ἃ δοκοῦμεν ἀτιμότερα εἶναι τοῦ σώ ματος, τούτας τιμὴν περισσοτέραν περιτίθεμεν· καὶ τὰ ἀσχήμονα ἡμῶν εὐσχη μοσύνην περισσοτέραν ἔχει.

And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we* bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

Τὰ δὲ εὐσχήμονα ἡμῶν, οὐ χρείαν ἔχει. ̓Αλλ ̓ ὁ Θεὸς συνεκέρασε τὸ σῶμα, τῷ ὑσε τεροῦντι περισσοτέραν δοὺς τιμὴν·

For our comely parts have no need:

having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

VER. 25.

Ἵνα μὴ ᾖ σχίσμα ἐν τῷ σώματι· ἀλλὰ τὸ αὐτὸ ὑπὲρ ἀλλήλων μεριμνῶσι τὰ μέλη.

That there should be no schism in

the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. * Or, division.

VER. 15.

1 COR. XII. 15-28.

Ἐὰν εἴπῃ ὁ πούς· Ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ χεὶρ, οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος· οὐ παρὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σώματος;

If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

VER. 16.

ὀφ

Καὶ ἐὰν εἴπῃ τὸ οὖς· Ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ θαλμὸς, οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ σώματος· οὐ παρὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σώματος ;

And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

VER. 17.

Εἰ ὅλον τὸ σῶμα ὀφθαλμὸς, ποῦ ἡ ἀκοή ; but God hath tempered the body together, εἰ ὅλον ἀκοὴ, ποῦ ἡ ἔσφρησις ;

If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

VER. 18.

Νυνὶ δὲ ὁ Θεὸς ἔθετο τὰ μέλη, ἓν ἕκαστ τον αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ σώματι, καθὼς ἠθέλησεν. But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

VER. 19.

Εἰ δὲ ἦν τὰ πάντα ἓν μέλος, ποῦ τὸ σώμα;

And if they were all one member, where were the body ?

VER. 20.

Νῦν δὲ πολλὰ μὲν μέλη, ἐν δὲ σῶμα. But now are they many members, yet but one body.

VER. 21.

Οὐ δύναται δὲ ὀφθαλμὸς εἰπεῖν τῇ χειρί Χρείαν σου οὐκ ἔχω· ἢ πάλιν ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῖς ποσί· Χρείαν ὑμῶν οὐκ ἔχω.

And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

VER. 22.

̓Αλλὰ πολλῷ μᾶλλον τὰ δοκοῦντα μέλη τοῦ σώματος ἀσθενέστερα ὑπάρχειν, ἀναγκατά ἐστι.

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary :

VER. 26.

Καὶ εἴτε πάσχει ἓν μέλος, συμπάσχει πάντα τὰ μέλη· εἴτε δοξάζεται ἓν μέλος, συγχαίρει πάντα τὰ μέλη.

a And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

VER. 27.

Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε σῶμα Χριστοῦ, καὶ μέλη ἐκ μέρους.

VER. 28.

Καὶ οὓς μὲν ἔθετο ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησία πρῶτον ἀποστόλους, δεύτερον προφήτας, τρίτον διδασκάλους, ἔπειτα δυνάμεις, εἶτα χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων, ἀντιλήψεις, κυβερνή σεις, γένη γλωσσῶν.

body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

VER. 4.

Ἡ ἀγάπη μακροθυμεῖ, χρηστεύεται· ἡ ἀγάπη οὐ ζηλοῖ· ἡ ἀγάπη οὐ περπερεύε ται, οὐ φυσιοῦται,

a Charity suffereth long, band is kind 5 e charity envieth not ; charity * vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

a Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins, Prov. x. 12. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves; for charity shall cover the multitude of sins, 1 Pet. iv. 8. b Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you, Eph. iv. 32. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye, Col. iii. 12, 13. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us : and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso bath this world's good, and seeth his brobowels of compassion from him, how ther have need, and shutteth up his dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth, 1 John iii. 16-18.

VER. 5.

Οὐκ ἀσχημονεῖ, οὐ ζητεῖ τὰ ἑαυτῆς, οὐ παροξύνεται, οὐ λογίζεται τὸ κακὸν,

a Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily pro voked, thinketh no evil;

a Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us : for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you, 2 Thess. iii. 6, 7.

a Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law, Psal. cxix. 156. Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour, Prov. xiv. 9. And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Luke xix. 41.

bAnd Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians, Exod. xviii. 9. What then? notwithstanding every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice, Phil. i. 18. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father, 2 John 4. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth, 3 John 4.

VER. 10.

Ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ τὸ τέλειον, τότε τὸ ἐκ μέρους καταργηθήσεται.

a But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be

done

away.

a And I saw no temple therein : for the Lord God Almighty, and the Lamb, are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof, Rev. xxi. 22, 23. And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever, xxii. 4, 5.

VER. 11.

Ὅτε ἤμην νήπιος, ὡς νήπιος ἐλάλουν, ὡς νήπιος ἐφρόνουν, ὡς νήπιος ἔλογιζόμην· ὅτε δὲ γέγονα ἀνὴς, κατήργηκα τὰ τοῦ νηπίου.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

VER. 12.

Βλέπομεν γὰρ ἄρτι δι ̓ ἐσόπτρου ἐν αἰνίγματι, τότε δὲ πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσω πον· ἄρτι γινώσκω ἐκ μέρους, τότε δὲ ἐπιγνώσομαι καθὼς καὶ ἐπεγνώσθην.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Νινὶ δὲ μένει πίστις, ἐλπὶς, ἀγάπη, τὰ τρία ταῦτα· μείζων δὲ τούτων ἡ ἀγάπη. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but a the greatest of these is charity.

CHAP. XIV. VER. 1. Διώκετε τὴν ἀγάπην, ζηλοῦτε δὲ τὰ πνευματικά· μᾶλλον δὲ ἵνα προφητεύητε· a Follow after charity, and desire b spiritual gifts, but rather that ye muy prophesy.

a He that followeth after righteousness and mercy, findeth life, righteousness, and honour, Prov. xxi. 21. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, Rom. xiv. 19. But thou, Ο man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness, 1 Tim. vi. 11. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord, Heb. xii. 14. Let him seek peace, and ensue it, 1 Pet. iii. 11..
