ANNUAL MEETING.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12TH, 1870.

THE sixteenth annual meeting of the Boston Board of Trade was held at the rooms of the Board, in Chauncy Street, on Wednesday, the 12th of January, 1870, at half-past three, P.M.

The President, Mr. ALEXANDER H. RICE, Occupied the chair.

The records of the last annual meeting were read and approved.

Six gentlemen, approved by the Executive Committee, were, by ballot, admitted to membership.

The Committee appointed to consider "the question of Customs Duties," and to report to the Board "the principles and qualifying conditions which, in their judgment, should govern the tariff legislation of the country," presented in print an unanimous report, which will be found in another part of this volume. The report was accepted, with but one dissenting vote.

The Secretary presented a report with maps and

photographs, just received from Mr. NATHAN APPLETON, the delegate of the Board at the opening of the Suez Canal. The report in full appears also in this volume.

On motion of Mr. F. W. LINCOLN, Jr., it was voted,

That the thanks of the Board are hereby tendered to Mr. NATHAN APPLETON, who represented the Board as its delegate at the ceremonies connected with the opening of the Suez Canal, for the very full and elaborate report of the proceedings made by him, and for the valuable maps and charts which accompany it.

The Secretary submitted his annual report, and on motion of Mr. CHARLES G. NAZRO, it was voted,

That the Secretary's report be accepted; and that he be authorized to publish the same, with the usual documents and statistical tables.

The report of the Treasurer, Mr. JAMES Swan, was presented by Mr. J. H. THORNDIKE; the receipts for the year, including a balance from the previous account of $953 23, were $8,554 81, and the expenditures, $8,387 56, leaving a balance on hand, to the credit of the Board, of $167 25.

The report was accepted, and ordered to be placed on file.

Mr. JAMES A. DUPEE, from the Committee, appointed on the 3d inst. to nominate officers for the ensuing year, reported the following ticket:
