BEGONE DULL CARE.

I would strongly advise every one who has been worried by too many English grammars to read Thomas R. Lounsbury's "The Standard Usage of English" (Harpers). Proofreaders are not purists -they can not afford to be. In fact, the purist or precisian is the printer's natural enemy. There is, therefore, much comfort in Professor Lounsbury's defense of the language as it was and is against those who have written of what it should have been and ought to be. To make clear what I mean, let me try an imaginary sentence or two:

Our mutual friend narrates that the ship laid towards the two last wharves which are being built thro' the tireless efforts and stamina of some reliable people in our midst. "For to fully appreciate the situation," says he, "I had rather we were given a donation or that even rich females would loan us the ducats, and so learn people something, than that the greed of the mob, than whom none are more idiotic, should be proven our sovran."

Professor Lounsbury is, of course, not respon sible for all this, but he has justified a good many of the words and expressions I employ. One or two of them are archaic and almost all of them have been the subject of fierce denunciation. "Mob," for instance, is one of the vilest coinages ever perpetrated. The two sentences are enough to make Dean Swift, Webster, Goold Brown and R. G. White turn in their graves, and I hate to think of what might happen if some one sprung them on the New York Sun without a word of warning. I by no means present them as a model of style-merely to show that much is at least permissible, and that continuous good usage will sanctify anything, though the heathen rage and the grammarians imagine vain things. W. MATCHES. Brooklyn, N. Y.

AMONG "style" items on an American paper the order stood that "balance" (referring to financial statements) should always be rendered "remainder." A new arrival was duly notified, and took it literally, without any limitation. Hence when a piece of casualty "copy" fell to his lot there was justification in setting it up thus: "John Blank, working on a three-story building in Twelfth avenue, lost his remainder, and fell a distance of fifty feet."-Ex.

APPROVE not of him who commends all you say. -Franklin.
