INSURANCE. This topic has received much attention at the hands of the membership during the past twelve months. Opinions expressed thereon by various writers for THE JOURNAL greatly differ. A discussion of this subject will not be entered into here, as the last convention referred it to the executive council, and the conclusions of that body appear in its report, printed elsewhere in this volume. As a member of the council and the compiler of the figures used in its report, I heartily concur in its deductions and bespeak therefor the Postage stamps and stamped envelops.. The International Union, unlike many other organizations, has but one burial benefit. Other trades have found strength in a graduated burial benefit, the amount paid in each case depending upon continuous membership. Certain it is that a member of five, ten or fifteen years' good standing at the time of his demise has contributed more to the organization in money and personal energy than one whom death overtakes in one or two years after his affiliation. Many of our members believe the International Typographical Union should have a graduated burial benefit, based on length of continuous membership, and this idea is worthy of our consideration. Should unfavorable action be taken upon the mortuary benefits recommended by the executive council it would, in my opinion, be to the advantage of the International Union to adopt a graduated burial benefit. By collecting an additional 25 cents per member per month burial benefits can be paid as follows: $50 for a membership of one year or less. $100 for a membership of over one and not more than two years. $150 for a membership of over two and not more than three years. $200 for a membership of over three and notmore than five years. $250 for a membership of over five years. Possibly it will be urged that such a benefit as is suggested is not large enough. It would at |
