CONVERSION OF RADIO BEARINGS 13 Should the position by dead reckoning differ greatly from the true position of the ship as determined by plotting the corrected radio bearings, a retrial should be made, using the new value as the position of the ship. Table of corrections, in minutes [Difference of longitude in half degrees] 150 155 159 163 168 127 138 129 123 Middle latitude, 40 14 Example. A ship in latitude 39° 50′ N., longitude 67° 35′ W., by dead reckoning, obtains a radio bearing of 299° true on the radiobeacon of the Nantucket Shoals Lightship, located in latitude 40° 37′ N., and longitude 69° 37′ W. Radiobeacon station_-_- Latitude, 40° 37′ N. 39 50 Radiobeacon station__. Dead reckoning position of ship Longitude, 69° 37′ W. 67 35 Longitude difference, 2 02 Entering the table with difference of longitude equals 2°, which is the nearest tabulated value, and opposite 40° middle latitude, the correction of 39' is read. The ship being east of the radiobeacon, the correction is minus. The Mercator bearing will then be 299° -0° 39' 298° 21'. To facilitate plotting, add 180° and plot from Nantucket Shoals Lightship, thus; 298° 21' +180°=478° 21′ or 118° 21', which true bearing should be laid off from the plotted position of Nantucket Shoals Lightship. If the bearing is from a radio direction-finder station ashore, the signs will be reversed to those given above. Radiotelegraphic weather broadcasts.-The United States Weather Bureau issues daily (Sundays and holidays included) bulletins containing weather reports, forecasts, and warnings for the benefit of marine interests in the North Atlantic and in the States bordering on that ocean. These bulletins are broadcast from coastal radio stations. Complete details relative to the above service, including method of decoding the major bulletins and a list of stations from which localized broadcasts are made, are published in Circular No. 13—Radio, issued by the Weather Bureau. Information concerning weather broadcasts may also be obtained from publication H. O. No. 205. FREE MEDICAL ADVICE TO SEAMEN BY RADIO The United States Public Health Service maintains the following stations from which free medical service by radio may be obtained direct: New York, N. Y., United States Marine Hospital No. 70. Alternate, United States Marine Hospital No. 21, Stapleton, N. Y. Key West, Fla., United States Marine Hospital No. 10. Governmental and commercial radio stations will transmit free messages addressed to any of the above stations. In order to avoid confusion and to make the practice uniform, all messages for transmission will be signed "Marine Hospital No.-," or " Public Health Service Relief Station No. as the case may be. All coastal stations of the Radiomarine Corporation of America offer free medical message service to ships of all countries. Messages received from masters of vessels reporting symptoms observed in a sick member of the crew are promptly forwarded to the nearest United States marine hospital, where the case is diagnosed by the medical staff from the information given in the master's message. A course of treatment is then decided upon and suitable instructions transmitted to the vessel. No charges are made on such messages for the radiotelegraphic service when they are prefixed by "D H Medico." COAST GUARD STATIONS 15 The following is a list of the Radiomarine Corporation of The following is a list of radio stations of the United Fruit Co. and affiliated companies through which medical service may be obtained without charge, so for as these companies are concerned, by ships of all nationalities. The Miami and New Orleans stations of the Tropical Radio Telegraph Co. are in a position to render medical advice through their connections with hospitals in those cities. Messages for Miami should be addressed to the radio station there, and those for New Orleans should be addressed "Unifruitco Neworleans." In emergencies, free medical advice may be obtained by ships at sea by radio from the Panama Canal, through the radio stations at Colon, Balboa, or Cape Mala. Such messages should be addressed: Govt. C. B., Medico, Pancanal," state briefly and clearly the symptoms to be treated, and be signed by the master. 66 Further details regarding this service can be obtained from publication H. O. No. 205. UNITED STATES COAST GUARD STATIONS Coast Guard stations are maintained at the places named in the following table. The stations, except where shown "Discontinued as an active unit," are fully manned throughout the year and are supplied with boats, wreck guns, beach apparatus, and all other appliances for affording assistance in case of shipwreck. Instructions to enable mariners to avail themselves fully of the assistance thus afforded will be found in the appendix, page 356. The Coast Guard stations are provided with the International Code Signals and are prepared to send or receive signals in that code or by means of the Semaphore Code, the Occulting or Flashinglight Code, or the International Morse Wigwag Code. Telephone facilities are available at the stations for the summoning of Coast Guard cutters, tugs, or other assistance, or for communicating with telegraph lines.
