THE MAN OUT OF WORK,

It was gratifying to read in the December JOURNAL an article on "The Man Out of Work," for there are not very many of our membership who ever stop to consider the other fellow. In every locality, practically, where it was necessary to resort to a strike in order to win the fight for the eight-hour day, there have been found among those who were loyal to our cause and stood out some whose chances for ever securing employment again in a printshop were few, indeed. The writer has in mind three members of No. 57 who are in this position today, three men who have worked as faithfully and conscientiously as any three men could, and yet they are now facing a problem that it pitiful, to say the least. Out of work, of that age where an employer looks upon them more with disfavor than anything else, and no assistance from the organization which called them from their work and brought this hardship about. The writer believes that these men are justly entitled to assistance as long as they need it and remain true, for have we not by our acts brought it about, and did we not promise to care for them during the struggle?

The fight is not over; there is still a great deal of work to be done before we can lay claim to a complete victory. True, the eight-hour day has been inaugurated in a great number of printing establishments throughout the jurisdiction, but the outer edges still remain to be cleared up, and in doing this we are forgetting all about those who have been thrown on their own resources. Some action should be taken whereby assistance might be rendered to all those who are now unable to find work and have proven themselves worthy by their actions in the late struggle.

The next convention is a great ways off, and ere that comes some of these men might be visited by the "wolf" and compelled to resort to something that it would almost break their hearts to do under normal circumstances and where everything would be equal.
