a setting-up exercise designed to expand the chest. Finally, he struck his chest a resounding blow, and in a full, resonant voice said: "Young men, I am over forty years of age, but I believe in lung power and good physique." The resonant power of his words carried absolute conviction.

Breathe in such a way as to expand the lower part of the lungs as much as possible. Measure the expansion.

Endeavor to swing the arms so that the backs of your hands will touch behind you. Then breathe deeply and notice the effect.

Every morning when you arise stand in your open window and take five long, deep breaths. Do the same when you retire at night.

At least once or twice during the day, as you walk in the street, practise the following lung exercise. See how many steps you can take during the time you are filling your lungs to full capacity. Repeat the exercise from day to day. Buy a tape measure and observe your growing power to expand your lungs.

Breathe deeply by aid of the diaphragm., Avoid all clothing that cramps the lungs. Form the habit of drawing deep breaths as you speak. Make your voice resonant.

If you address an audience, stand erect, with stomach in and chest well expanded. Look at those whom you wish your voice to reach. You will find you have gained

force, reaching power, resonance, and a commanding personality.

PROBLEM.

Fill your lungs well, and read aloud a paragraph from a daily paper, breathing easily and freely during the reading.

How to Improve the Use of the Lips

KEY WORDS:

MAKE FULL USE OF YOUR LIPS.

You are at the opera listening to Caruso. You look through your opera glasses and you see that he opens his mouth far more widely than you ever do, and that he moves his lips more mobilely than do most people. Much of his power comes from his ability to move lips and mouth in such a way as to produce sound to best advantage.

Now take a mirror and look into it while you speak in your usual manner. Watch the reflection of your lips and mouth. You will be astonished at the lack of mobility you observe.

Your mirror will tell you exactly how much you need to train your lips and mouth.

Take this very page and read it aloud to yourself in the mirror. Make your lips and mouth much more mobile than you would ever wish them to be in actual speech. As you read every word, read it with your lips and mouth.

If you are to speak in public, give your address to yourself in the mirror. Make your lips mobile.

Read this page as if you were reading it to a deaf person who had to read your lips in order to understand you. Make no sound whatever.

I have in mind two persons who illustrate the use of the lips in speech.

One of the most painful things in every political campaign is to hear a speaker abuse his vocal cords by unInstead of modulating the necessarily loud talking. voice for emphasis, he yells, thereby losing almost all emphasis. His voice can not endure the strain and it fails. Then he drinks cold water and is able to go on for a short time only. And so he continues until at last he

consults a throat specialist.

It is possible for a man to speak repeatedly, and at length, as do many of our best lecturers, without overstraining the voice.

If you do not take a cold bath every morning, you should at least wash the throat daily with cold water, and gargle with cool water at night.

Put this book down now, and gargle your throat immediately with cool water, and notice the effect.

Do not drink cold water while giving a speech, or immediately after a speech.
