Introduction to Book VII

You are now to turn your attention to speech on the public occasions in which you are certain to take part.

It is certain that a careful study of Book VII will benefit you immediately, and on many occasions in the future.

The principles laid down in Book VII will help you to take an active, a vigorous, and a successful part in your duties as a citizen in a country in which public speech > plays an important part.

Study Book VII carefully, and then put its principles into active practice.

[blocks in formation]

You are called upon to go before an audience and make an announcement of some kind.

[merged small][ocr errors]

1. Do not speak at all until you have taken your place immediately in the center of the platform, or before the audience.

If you speak from any other part of the room you detract from the dignity of the announcement.

2. Do not speak at all until the room is perfectly quiet.

You may command quiet by your appearance, by raising your hand, or by calling the audience to order by rapping with a gavel. Under no circumstances should you try to raise your voice above the sound of talking.

3. Begin your announcement with the words: "Gentlemen," or "Ladies and Gentlemen."

4. Make the announcement as simply and as briefly as possible.

(a) It is best to hold your main announcement until the last, as a means of preserving order. Here is an example: "Ladies and Gentlemen: Owing to the fact that there has been a railroad wreck, Mr. Garrick Jones will not be present this evening. In his absence we are fortunate to have the services of a pianist of high reputation, Mr. Arthur Trainton."

5. When you have made the announcement, do not say, "Thank you," but sit down quietly.

PROBLEM.

Think out the words of an announcement of a change in the program at an amateur play.

LESSON 136.

How to Make a Presentation Speech

KEY WORDS: IN MAKING A PRESENTATION SPEECH DEVELOP A DOUBLE CLIMAX.

The organization to which you belong wishes to honor one of its members by presenting a gift, representative of the good will of the entire body.

You have been chosen to make the presentation speech.

The time has arrived, the person to be honored, and all the members of the organization, are present. The moment for your speech has come. What will you say?

There are three things to do:

1. Develop a climax.

2. Develop a compliment.

3. Present a gift.

You must do this in such a way that all three purposes will unite more or less in one effect.

To do all this follow six steps:

1. Tell how it happened that you and your associates became familiar with the person to be honored.
