MONEY. MONEY. No. 2.- MONEY OF VARIOUS COLONIAL POSSESSIONS, WITH THE ENGLISH EQUIVALENTS. Note.-For purposes of abbreviation the term Rx. has, sometimes, been used in this Abstract, and is equal to 10 rupees. (a) The rupee has been converted into £ sterling as follows: For British India, in the year ended 31st March, 1890-1, at 1s. 6d. ; in 1891-2, at 1s. 43d. ; in 1892-3, at 1s. 3d.; in 1893-4, at 1s. 24d.; in 1894-5, at 1s. 1d. ; in 1895-6, at is. 14d.; in 1896-7, at 1s. 24d.; in 1897-8, at 1s. 3jd. ; and in 1898-9 and later years at 1s. 4d. For Ceylon, Mauritius and Seychelles, in the year ended 31st December, 1890, at 1s. 6d. ; in 1891, at 1s. 54d.; in 1892, at 1s. 34d.; in 1893, at 1s. 24d.; in 1894 and 1895, at 1s. 1d.; in 1896, at 1s. 2d. ; in 1897, at 1s. 34d.; in 1898, at 1s. 3d.; and in 1899 and later years, at 1s. 4d. (b) In the Straits Settlements, the Straits Settlements silver dollar is, by a Proclamation dated 5th October, 1903, issued under the Straits Settlements (Coinage) Order-in-Council of 25th June, 1903, the standard coin of the Colony, and the Mexican dollar was treated, by the same Order-in-Council, as its equivalent. The British and Hong Kong dollars were also treated as the equivalent of the standard coin by Order-in-Council of 2nd February, 1895. Under a Notice issued on 24th August, 1904, Mexican, British and Hong Kong dollars ceased to be legal tender after 31st August, 1904. In Labuan and Hong Kong, the Mexican, British and Hong Kong dollars are current. Conversions of the silver dollar into £ sterling have been made for the Straits Settlements, Labuan and Hong Kong as follows: In 1890, at 3s. 4d.; in 1891, at 3s. 21d.; in 1892, at 2s. 10d.; in 1893, at 2s. 6d. ; in 1894, at 28. 1d.; in 1895, at 2s. 14d.; in 1896, at 2s. 2,,d.; in 1897, at 1s. 114d.; in 1898, at 1s. 11d.; in 1899, at 1s. 11jd.; in 1900, at 28.; in 1901, at is. 11d.; in 1902, at 1s. 84d.; in 1903, at 1s. 9d.; and in 1904 at 1s. 10łd. (c) In British Honduras, the Guatemalan silver dollar was the standard of currency prior to 1894, and conversions into £ sterling have been made as follows: In 1890, at 3s. 1d.; in 1891, at 2s. 114d.; in 1892, at 2s. 74d.; and in 1893, at 2s. 3fd. (d) In Gibraltar, British coins were made legal tender in 1898. Prior to that date the peseta was the standard of currency, and conversions into £ sterling have been made as follows: In 1890 at 9d.; in 1891, at 8d.; in 1892 to 1896, at 8d. ; and in 1897, at 71d. (e) Exclusive of the area (3544 sq. miles) and population of land on the Kowloon Peninsula leased to the British Government in 1898. The population was 102,254 at the Census of 1901. (f) This Territory was declared a British Possession on 4th September, 1888. The Foreig population at the Census of 1891 numbered 272 (228 males and 44 females). (g) Exclusive of Aborigines. (h) Exclusive of Maoris. estimated at 41,993 in 1891, and 43,143 in 1901. (j) Constituted a separate Colony by an Order-in-Council, dated 10th August, 1905 (k) Excluding the population of Zululand annexed to Natal on 30th December, 1897. (1) The Orange River Colony was annexed on 24th May, 1900, and the Transvaal on 1st September, 1900. (m) Population of the town of Lagos and Ebeute Metta only (n) Exclusive of the Protected Districts. The area of the whole Colony and Protectorate of Lagos was estimated at 28,910 sq. miles in 1904, and the population at 1,388,847 in 1901. (p) Exclusive of the area (about 26,000 sq. miles) and population (about 949,827 in 1905 of the territories under British jurisdiction adjacent to the Colony and proclaimed a British Protectorate on 21st August, 189 (1) Exclusive of the Protected Districts, with an area of 3,057 sq. miles and a population of 76,893 in 1901. In 1904, the area of the whole Colony and Protectorate was estimated at 3,700 sq. miles, and the population at 144,000. (r) For the Island of St. Mary only The rest of the Colony has, by Ordinance No. 7 of 1902, been placed under the Protectorate system of administration. (8) Exclusive of the population of Pondoland and British Bechuanaland, annexed in 1894 and 1895 respectively. (t) Census of 1904. No Census of the population was taken in 1901 owing to the war. The Cape returns include the population (287,229) of Pondoland and British Bechuanaland, annexed since 1891. (u) Including the area (280 sq. miles) of the Cook and other Islands of the Pacific annexed os June 10th, 1901. (v) Including Naval and Military population. AREA.-POPULATION. in each of the Years 1891 and 1901, and as Estimated on 31st December 1904, so far as available. (a) Exclusive of the area of lakes and rivers situated within the territorial limits of the Dominion of Canada, which is 125,755 sq. miles, excluding the area of the tidal waters of Hudson Bay, Ungava Bay, Gulf of St. Lawrence and Bay of Fundy. (b) Exclusive of the Military population. (c) Exclusive of Aborigines. (d) The area of Quebec was extended in accordance with the provisions of Act 3 of 1898. The number of the population in the area acquired under Act 3 is not included in the figures for Quebec for 1891, but is included in those given for the North-West Territories, &c.
