MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, TRANSMITTING The information required by the resolution of the House of Representalives of the 17th ultimo, in relation to charges preferred against certain officers of the Penitentiary in the District of Columbia, &c. APRIL 8, 1842. Referred to the Committee for the District of Columbia. To the House of Representatives of the United States: I transmit to the House of Representatives a report from the Secretary of State, and the papers which accompany it, in answer to a resolution of the 17th of March, 1842. The Secretary of State, to whom has been referred a resolution of the House of Representatives of the 17th of March, 1842, "That the President of the United States be requested to lay before this House the separate charges preferred against certain officers connected with the penitentiary in the District of Columbia, the instructions to the commission appointed to inquire into those charges, the report made by them in both cases, and the testimony taken by them, and likewise the action of the Execu tive on the report and testimony," has the honor to submit copies of papers now on file in the Department of State, being all those to which, it is believed, the said resolution refers.
