This new nonrecurring project provides for the construction of a mooring facility with a capacity of five tugs and the construction or remodeling of a suitable existing building for use as a shore repair and maintenance station at Cristobal.

At present, tugs tie up side by side between jobs on the end of Pier 6. manner of berthing results in extensive damage to the facing piles and causes power hook-up difficulties.

This

Tug service supports are now centered in a remote, small wooden structure, which does not have sufficient storage space to accommodate spare parts required for the normal daily operation of automated tugs. Because of space limitations, spare parts and tools are stored in the Mt. Hope storehouse, resulting in unnecessary delays to running repair work.

In 1972 the Environmental Protection Agency established regulations on the standards of performance for marine sanitation devices which were promulgated to all U.S. Government agencies with operations on the navigable waters of the United States including Canal Zone waters.

To assure compliance with these regulations, this project provides for the purchase and installation of holding tanks on Company floating craft, shore and water based sewage collection equipment and alterations to existing sewage treatment plants to provide for disposal of the marine sewage.

The FY 1975 phase of the project will provide for initial alterations to existing sewage treatment plants, the purchase of three 4,000 gallon vacuum tank trailers and two tractors to transport the trailers.

This project provides for the construction of a logistical support facility in Gamboa for the dredging operations. These facilities will include office space, storage areas for linen, rations, and custodial supplies. A kitchen will also be included in the area.

Food storage space and food preparation facilities are nonexistent in the area. All meals, hot and cold, must be purchased and transported considerable distances from points of delivery. These facilities provide for the needs of floating plant operations, for tour launch as well as other official functions. Support consists of providing food and catering services, functions which are extremely difficult to perform with the limited shore-based facilities presently available.

This project provides for replacement of the roof on Building 29 containing the pump house and compressor plant and other support equipment for Balboa Dry Dock No. 1. The current roof has deteriorated through normal aging and wear and is no longer economically serviceable.

The new roof will be of corrugated aluminum with some translucent plastic roofing suitably spaced for improved lighting. New monitor louvers and monitor flashings will also be installed.

This is a nonrecurring project beginning in FY 1975 and will be completed subsequent to FY 1981. The project provides for design, procurement, and installation of five turntables as replacements for existing turntables.

The Locks presently have turntables installed at both ends of the center walls at Gatun and Miraflores, and at the lower end only of the center wall at Pedro Miguel. These turntables were installed in 1964 concurrent with the delivery of the present locomotives. Turntables are necessary to transfer locomotives from one side of the center wall to the other, as required, with the locomotive being rotated 180 degrees.

The operating mechanism of these turntables have become unsatisfactory, with the braking and track registry difficult to maintain in adjustment. In addition,
