REVIEW OF THE YEAR.

1911-1912.

This annual report contains the record of one of the most active and successful years in the long

history of the Chamber of Commerce. The membership has increased to the highest point. The attendance at the meetings has exceeded the average of former years. The financial position of the Chamber has been strengthened by the surrender of upwards of $340,000 of building fund debt certificates. The various committees have worked faithfully with the problems submitted to them, and there has been a notable manifestation of that civic patriotism which is the best guarantee of good government and commercial prosperity. A new field of public service has been opened up through the appointment of a Committee on Commercial Education, with prospects of enduring benefits to the city and the country. A mere recapitulation of the more prominent subjects dealt with during the year affords some idea of the scope and importance of the Chamber's activities: Appointment of Committee on Commercial Education.

Action looking to the organization of a Commercial Education. Council for the purpose of providing additional facilities for Commercial Education in the City of New York.

Initial steps toward the establishment of a College of Commerce. A notable special meeting was held in February to afford opportunity for a Conference on Commercial Education.

Continuous action in behalf of a comprehensive and scientific development of the port facilities.

The establishment of a New York and New Jersey Commission to study the pier head line problem.
