The first four Readers of Sargent's series form a complete series of Reading Books for the Primary, Grammar, and District Schools of the country. The fifth Reader is intended as a first-class book for higher Schools, Colleges, and Academies. The unbounded success with which these Readers have met since publication, leads the publishers to say, emphatically, that no series of Readers ever published in this country has had such universal recommendation from all who have examined them. Their adoption throughout the country, by School Committees and Teachers who have acquainted themselves with their merits, has been most general.

Those who would procure for Schools what is pronounced the best series of Readers yet published will send for Sargent's. Copies for examination will be furnished gratis to Teachers and Committees, on application to the Publishers. Or they will be sent by mail pre-paid, where the amount of postage is sent in stamps. The postage rates are, on the Fifth Reader, 24 cents; the Fourth, 18 cents; the Third, 15 cents; the Second, 12 cents; on the First, 9 cents; on the Primer, 6 cents; on the Standard Speller, 12 cents; on the smaller Speller, 6 cents. and

Sargent's Series, though new in the field, has already had unparalleled success, is fast being introduced into the best Schools of the Union.

Let facts speak for themselves: of this Series, though but a few months complete, upwards of TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND COPIES have already been sold!

[From the Wisconsin Journal of Education.]

SARGENT'S STANDARD READERS.-If the evils of book-making, as Lord Bacon said, are only to be cured by making more books, such as shall cause the bad ones to be forgotten, then will this Series do good. We do not well see what remains to be done, in order that a series of readers should embrace more good qualities than these. We think Mr. Sargent peculiarly happy in treating the principles of elocution. This part of the Fifth Reader should be in the hands of every Teacher. We notice several points in which these Readers possess very decided merit. Those wishing a series exhibiting a thorough knowledge on the part of the author of the wants of our Schools, fine taste in making selections, and an unquestionable morality, will do well to send word to the publishers.

PHILLIPS, SAMPSON & CO.,

No. 13 Winter street, Boston.

[blocks in formation]

McGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC SPELLING BOOK: for primary and common schools. McGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC FIRST READER: lessons in reading and spelling for the younger pupils.

MCGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC SECOND READER: lessons in reading and spelling for young pupils.

MCGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC THIRD READER: for middle classes; chaste and instructive lessons in prose and poetry.

MCGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC FOURTH READER: for more advanced classes; clegant extracts in prose and poetry.

MCGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC FIFTH READER (Rhetorical Guide): a rhetorical reading book for the highest classes.

THE HEMANS READER: for female seminaries; elegant extracts in prose and poetry. The above Spelling and Reading Books have few equals, and no superiors; which is evinced by the fact, that in schools where they were, for a time, superseded by the novelty of other books, McGuffey's have been re-adopted to the exclusion of all others, experience having proved their greater practical utility in the school room.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR.

PINNEO'S PRIMARY GRAMMAR, on the analytic method: a complete work for beginners in the study.

PINNEO'S ANALYTICAL GRAMMAR: a full and complete treatise, for academies and schools.

PINNEO'S ENGLISH TEACHER: in this is taught the Structure of Sentences by analysis and synthesis. The most thorough philosophical and comprehensive work of the kind now published.

Professor Pinneo's new works are model class-books on the subject of English Grammar. This study, usually dry, uninteresting, and irksome to learners, is rendered in these volumes attractive and interesting. They are strikingly simple, progressive, and thorough in their plan and arrangement, and enable pupils to become good grammarians. They are the cheapest works of the kind ever published.

ARITHMETIC.

RAY'S ARITHMETIC, Part First: simple lessons for the little learners.

RAY'S ARITHMETIC, Part Second: a complete text-book in Mental Arithmetic, by induction and analysis.

RAY'S ARITHMETIČ, Part Third: for schools and academies; a full and complete treatise on the inductive and analytic methods of instruction.

RAY'S HIGHER ARITHMETIC: the Principles of Arithmetic analyzed and practically applied, for advanced students, 448 pp., 12mo.

Numerous skillful Instructors regard the Arithmetics of Professor Ray as the most simple, progressive, methodical, and thorough class-books on the subject, ever before offered to American Teachers; and they are at least twenty per cent cheaper than any other arithmetics of like size, and of an equal amount of matter. These volumes are the result of practical experience in teaching, and they were prepared in compliance with the solicitation of many friends of education, who were cognizant of the marked success of their author as an Instructor.

ALGEBRA.

RAY'S ALGEBRA, Part First: for common schools and academies; a simple, progressive, and thorough elementary treatise.

RAY'S ALGEBRA, Part Second: for advanced students in academies, and for colleges; a progressive, lucid, and comprehensive work.

The great excellence of Ray's Arithmetics warranted the expectation that an Algebra, by the same author, would be an improvement on all similar treatises. Ray's Algebra has the approbation of the most judicious educators, and is superseding all others in many of the best schools in the United States.

EACH PART of the Arithmetical course, as well as the Algebraic, is a complete book in itself, and is sold separately.
