No. 3. Important physical changes:

The work of six-tracking the Harlem River & Port Chester Railroad is in active progress.

The construction of two additional tracks between Guilford and East River on the Shore Line from New Haven to New London, the beginning of a four-track line between the last points mentioned, has been nearly completed. About ten miles of new second track has been put in operation during the year. Similar work is in progress at various points on the system.

The new double-track bridge over the Connecticut River at Warehouse Point, Conn., was completed and put in operation June 5, 1905. Active work is in progress in building four-track bridges at four points on the system. In addition to the above important work, there has been a general renewal of bridges during the year.

The new passenger station at Bridgeport has been completed, and new station buildings at ten other stations have been put in service. Sundry freight stations have been enlarged, yards regraded, and the tracks re-arranged. Ten grade crossings have been eliminated during the year.

No. 4. On December 1, 1904, leases were made with the Dutchess County Railroad Company and the Central New England Railway Company, under which this Company has operated the roads from Hopewell Junction, N. Y. to Campbell Hall, N. Y., by way of Poughkeepsie, 43.47 miles.

No. 7. The funded debt has been increased by the issue of $2,365,000, 4% fifty year first mortgage, Harlem River & Port Chester Railroad bonds, being a part of the authorized issue last year of $15,000,000, the proceeds to be used for the re-construction and improvement of the line from New Rochelle into the city of New York. There was also an issue of $333,300 of 32% debentures, being the balance of $10,000,000 authorized last year.

No. 8. A purchase was made November 1, 1904, of 291,600 shares of the common stock and 22 shares of the preferred stock of the New York, Ontario & Western Railway Company, as shown on page 259. In addition to such purchase, the Company has expended $5,808,263.76 in acquiring other securities, as shown on page 259 and page 261.

Contracts, Agreements, etc.

The Adams Express Company operates over the road.
a percentage of the gross earnings.

The com

pensation is No. 2. The mail service is performed in accordance with Acts of the Congress, and for the compensation fixed by the Post Office Department. No. 3. Sleeping, parlor, and buffet cars are owned and operated by this company. Pullman cars are operated between Boston and Jersey City, filling joint lines with the Pennsylvania Railroad between Boston and Washington. Pullman cars are also run jointly with other roads betweeen New York City, Boston, and northern New England. Sixteen dining cars are operated between New York and Boston, owned and leased by this company.

Nos. 4, 5, and 6. The company has arrangements with its connections for the interchange of freight and passengers whereby it receives in some cases its local rates and in other cases a proportion of the through rate based on the relative mileage. There is also a contract (to which this company is a party) between the rail and water transporation lines between New York and Boston which regulates passenger and freight rates.

No. 7. Contract with the Western Union Telegraph Company for the transaction of the telegraph business, under which the railroad company furnishes operators at stations, carries telegraph material, etc., and receives a proportion of the gross receipts. Also contract with the Connecticut River Telegraph Company, covering the Valley Branch from Hartford to Saybrook Point. The railroad company to furnish operators, carry material, etc., and the telegraph company to transmit railroad company messages.

No. 8. Contracts with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, Southern Massachusetts Telephone Company, Providence Telephone Company, Southern New England Telephone Company, New York Telephone Company, Hudson River Telephone Company, and the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, for exchange, with the usual terms granted to railroad companies.
