The Shakers: Two Centuries of Spiritual ReflectionRobley Edward Whitson Paulist Press, 1983 - 370 страница "...while offerings by lamas and yogis have been plentiful, books on Western mystics were - and are - hard to find...this series should help remedy the situation." Psychology Today Shakers, The: Two Centuries of Spiritual Reflection Edited, with an introduction by Robley Edward Whitson preface by Gertrude M. Soule "...we believe, and do testify, that the present gospel of God's grace unto us is the day which in the scripture is spoken or prophesied of as the second appearing of Christ to consume or destroy antichrist, or false religion and to make an end of the reigning power of sin..." Joseph Meacham (1741-1796) The Shaker tradition, from its origin in late eighteenth-century England to its flowering in nineteenth-century America, long has been of interest to students of sociology and American religious history. Yet, few attempts have been made to relate Shaker theology and spirituality to the mainstream of Western mystical experience. In presenting this collection of Shaker texts, Robley E. Whitson contends that Shakerism has been generally misunderstood and, consequently, undervalued as a source of useful insights into the divine-human relationship. Here are collected the teachings of Ann Lee, Joseph Meacham, John Dunlavy, and others who walked in the Shaker Way as it unfolded over the decades. The foundational doctrines on community, celibacy, union with Christ, faith as process, and the male/female aspects of God are presented in the original writings of the movement. + |

Страница 67 - But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away ; how shall not the ministration of the Spirit be rather glorious 1 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
Страница 65 - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Страница 162 - The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage; but they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage : neither can they die any more, for they are equal unto the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

Страница 72 - To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Страница 162 - Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Страница 189 - Neither pray I for these alone but for them also which shall believe on me through their word, that they all may be one,— as thou Father art in me and I in thee that they also may be one in us : that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them, that they may be one even as we are one.
Страница 297 - Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
