NOTICE TO TEACHERS. I. The reading lessons are more or less consecutive; ¿.e., the more difficult passages are placed at the end of the book. II. The spelling lessons interspersed throughout the book contain the more difficult words in the previous passages. III. The Code takes no account of simple long division. As, however, this must be taught before compound long division, it has been placed after the exercises in compound multiplication. IV. The examination papers in arithmetic at the end of the book are verbatim, as set by different inspectors. It will be seen that they differ considerably in difficulty. V. Pieces for dictation have not been given, as inspectors' and teachers' tastes vary so much. VI. The fables and other short pieces are useful not only for short lessons, but also for the children to write out from memory as exercises in composition. VII. The Editor, himself for a time H. M.
