THE orations and speeches contained in the present volume were all delivered subsequent to July, 1858, with the exception of that on the Character of Washington, originally spoken on the 22d February, 1856, and repeated at intervals till the spring of 1861. It has never before been printed. The address entitled "Franklin the Boston Boy," and "The Causes and Conduct of the War," have also never appeared in type; that at the dinner to Prince Napoleon has been privately printed only; the remaining speeches are all republications, in some cases from newspaper reports, which never received the author's correction, and in which, therefore, some errors may be detected. The first three volumes contained no addresses of a political character. In accordance with what appears to have been the author's intention, the present volume comprehends two speeches partaking of that nature, the fifteenth and fifty-fourth, on pages 235 and 698. They were both spoken long after the close of the author's official life, and are neither of them a contribution to partisan literature.
