Lætior. At fpeculæ jam defcendamus ab arcè
Aeriâ; nam venit ineluctabilis hora;

Migrandum eft; en! dudum ifto mihi monte locati
Caftra movere parant Vigiles: en! dira corufcat
Fulgor atrox gladii, flammæque a fronte minaces.

Non jam fas cunctari; age, fomnos rumpe maritæ:
Olli ego turbatos animi per
mollia Auctus

Somnia compofui, placidæ prænuntia pacis;
Ipfa dabit jam fponte manus. Tu tempore dextro,
Participem facias, tibi quæ data, lucis; at unum
Hoc iterum atque iterum repetas, ut pectore in alto
Figatur ftabilita fides, de Semine ituram

Fœmineo diffusa hominum per fæcla salutem.

Hinc lucem ad fummam, quæ fera accedet, eandem
Ufque fidem colite unanimes; deflete peractum
Haud luctu immerito crimen; fed pleniùs altâ
Lætitiâ exhilarent faufti folatia finis.

Conticuit; montifque fimul faftigia linquunt:

Of fpeculation; for the hour precife

Exacts our parting hence: and fee! the Guards,
By me incamp'd on yonder hill, expect
Their motion; at whose front a flaming fword,
In fignal of remove, waves fiercely round.
We may no longer ftay: go, waken Eve;
Her alfo I with gentle dreams have calm'd,
Portending good; and all her fpirits compos'd
To meek fubmiffion; thou at feason fit

Let her with thee partake what thou haft heard;
Chiefly, what may concern her faith to know,
The great deliverance by her Seed to come,
For by the woman's Seed, on all mankind:
That ye may live, which will be many days,
Both in one faith unanimous, though fad,
With caufe, for evils paft: yet much more
cheer'd

With meditation on the happy end.

Deinde alacri çelerans ftudio præcurrit Adamus
Conjugis ad thalamum: dimiferat illa foporem,
Hisque virum excipiens dictis haud tristibus infit:

Unde redis, quòque hinc dudum via duxit, Adame,
Haud animi me fallit; ineft Deus ipse sopori
Scilicet, & liquidam pandunt infomnia lucem:
Qualia mî, præfaga boni, Indulgentia mifit
Numinis; ex quo me laffam, exhauftamque dolore,
Sternebam fomno. Quin duc age protinus; in me
Nulla mora; hic, alibi eft, quocunque folo, Paradifus,
Tu modò te comitem dederis mihi: Te fine, Conjux,
Non hic, non alibi eft, non terrarum omnibus oris.
Tu mihi res cunctæ, loca cuncta fub ætheris axe,
Unicus; ob mea qui fcelera hinc dimitteris exul.
Hæc tamen, hæc abeunti animum folatia mulcent
Fidentem: Quanquam per me omnia perdita latè,
Defluxit tanta immeritæ mihi gratia cœlo,
Per me promiffum reparârit ut omnia Semen.

He ended; and they both defcend the hill:
Defcended, Adam to the bow'r, where Eve
Lay fleeping, ran before; but found her wak'd;
And thus with words not fad she him receiv'd:
Whence thou return'ft, and whither went'ft, I
know:

For God is alfo in fleep, and dreams advise;
Which he hath fent propitious, fome great good
Prefaging; fince with forrow, and heart's diftrefs
Wearied I fell asleep. But now lead on;

In me is no delay; with thee to go,
Is to stay here; without thee here to stay,
Is to go hence unwilling: thou to me
Art all things under heav'n, all places thou;
Who for my wilful crime art banish'd hence.
This further confolation yet fecure

I carry hence; though all by me is loft,
Such favour I unworthy am vouchsaf'd,
By me the promis'd Seed fhall all reftore.

So fpake our mother Eve; and Adam heard
Finierat.

Dixerat: & lætis dicta auribus haufit Adamus;
At nil refpondit: namque ollis maximus Hofpes
Jam propior ftetit; adverfique a culmine montis
Flammea præfcriptam stationem adiere Cherubum
Agmina, fufpenfis per humum labentia plantis.
-Ut nebula, ex fluviis se effundens vespere sero,
Pervolitat denfas liquido pede lapfa paludes,
Agricolamque premit reducem, calcemque fuburget.
Undantes a fronté faces fublime vibratus
Numinis evomuit gladius, ceù crine cometa
Terribili lugubre rubens, cœlique benignam
Temperiem invertit: torrenti incanduit atrox
Igne vapor, quantus fitientibus incubat Afris.
Corripit inde manu noftros utrâque Parentes
Nuntius, increpitatque moras; portamque ad eoam
Ducit agens, celsâque iterum de rupe jacentem
Ocius in campum; tenues dein fugit in auras.
Convertere oculos; latèque plagas Paradifi

Well-pleas'd, but anfwer'd not: for now too
nigh

Th' Arch-angel ftood; and from the other hill
To their fix'd station, all in bright array,
The Cherubim defcended; on the ground
Gliding meteorous; as ev'ning mist,

Ris'n from a river, o'er the marish glides;.
And gathers ground faft at the laborer's heck,
Homeward returning. High in front advanc'd,

The brandish'd fword of God before them blaz'd,
Fierce as a comet; which with torrid heat,
And vapors as the Libyan air adust,
Began to parch that temperate clime: whereat
In either hand the haft'ning Angel caught
Our lingring parents; and to th' eastern gate
Led them direct; and down the cliff as fast,
To the fubjected plain; then difappear'd.
They looking back, all theaftern fide beheld

Eoas

Eoas, fua tam nuper lætiffima rura,

Flammivomo mucrone vident ardefcere; formifque

Obfeffam horrificis portam, & flagrantibus armis.

Naturæ imperio lacrimas mifere, repente

Deterfas: Patuit fpatiofis tractibus orbis

Terrarum, requiem optatam dulcifque receffus
Quà peterent fibi cunque loca; & Deus adfuit auspex.
Tum vaga, lentaque, ducentes veftigia, palmis

Connexis, folos Edeni abiere per agros.

Of Paradife, fo late their happy feat,
Wav'd over by that flaming brand; the gate
With dreadful faces throng'd, and fiery arms,
Some natural tears they drop'd, but wip'd them
foon:

The World was all before them, where to chufe A Their place of reft, and Providence their guide. They hand in hand, with wand'ring steps and flow, Through Eden took their folitary way.
