Ir was thought needless to reprint the Characters of Mr. Fox, which Dr. Parr selected from newspapers and other publications, as, though interesting in themselves, they did not belong to him. All that was actually written by himself, and published under the name of Philopatris Varvicensis, is here reprinted, excepting only the Character of Mr. Fox in Latin, which will be found in the Preface to Bellendenus, and the Discussion on a μιαρόν τι καὶ ἄῤῥητον βδέλυγμα, in the omission of which it is conceived a sound discretion has been exercised. The punishment proposed for that particular offence, is an inimitable specimen of the bonhomie and almost childlike simplicity of our venerable friend-verbum non amplius. The long note on Law, though too long, too much elaborated, and too much illustrated, comprises so many excellencies peculiar to Dr. Parr's mode of thinking, and mode of writing, that it alone will sanction the republication of the Philopatris to every English reader.
