This institution was chartered by the legislature of New-York in 1831, and commenced operations in 1832. It contains at present forty-two pupils of both sexes, and applications continue to be made for the reception of others. There are upwards of 800 blind persons in the state. The pupils are instructed in reading, (by means of raised letters,) writing, arithmetic, geography, music, needle-work, and various mechanical branches. Thirty-two of the pupils are supported by the state, and eleven by the corporation of the city of New-York. The directors are in hopes the present legis. iature will enable them to increase this number. The institution is situated in Thirty-fourth-street, between the 8th and 9th Avenues, and has in possession 32 lots of land, and a commodious building, a present from Mr. James Boorman, of the firm of Boorman & Johnston, of this city.
