LITERATURE,

ITS

RISE, PROGRESS, FORTUNES AND ADVANTAGES.

THE SUBJECT OF AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE RETIRING

PRESIDENT,

MR. CHARLES SPENCE,

BEFORE THE CHATHAM SOCIETY,

AT THE

OPENING OF SESSION 1861-1862.

LIVERPOOL:

GEO. SMITH, WATTS AND CO. PRINTERS.

MDCCCLXIII.

[blocks in formation]

TO THE BOOK.

"Go little Book, thyself present,
As child whose parent is unkent,*
To her who is th' embodiment
Of Loveliness and Purity:

And if that trouble come to thee,
As sure it may, for succour flee
Under the shadow of her wing.

If question'd who thee forth did bring,
Reply, a student did thee sing
Oft as his straying thoughts he said:
And when the Lady has thee read
Crave pardon for thy hardyhed.
But if that any ask thy name,
Say thou wert issued forth in shame,
In fear of error, wrong and blame;
And when thou art past jeopardy,
Come tell me what was said of me,
And I may send more after thee."

Adapted from "Spenser's Address

to the Shepherd's Calendar."
