to the matter from time to time and when we see our way clear for the fruition of our plans, recommendation will be made to put them into effect.

LODGE AND DISTRICT FUNDS:

Although not a matter under the jurisdiction of your Trustees, we make mention of several funds that have come to our attention, as they have for their object matters closely related to the work of the Trustees.

(1) College.

St. George Lodge, No. 6, Schenectady, scholarships in Union

(2) Educational Foundation Fund of Parish Lodge, No. 292, at Buffalo: Assistance to children after they leave the Home.

(3)

Fifth Manhattan District Fund: Assistance to children after they leave the Home.

(4) Second Manhattan District Fund: Vacations for children.

IN GENERAL:

A careful persual of the Treasurer's report will suggest the thought that there has been a great awakening of the Craft and this may be directly traced to the Sinking Fund campaign, which aroused the membership both to its duty and to its opportunities. Inquiry no longer comes to the Trustees as to when the membership will be relieved of tax; the inquiry now is "What can we do to help?" There is evidence of a realization that we are passing on a tremendous obligation to our successors, and an apparent gain in determination to pass on also means to in some measure counterbalance the obligation. The situation is such that we are confident of the accomplishment of the many things necessary to be done to bring the Craft abreast of the times, and make us a material factor in bearing our share of the misfortunes of the community in which we live.

If you have read the short stories written by the children of the Home for the Masonic Standard you will have noticed that they could only come from happy and contented children, healthy both in mind and body. Knowledge of their situation as it is, in comparison with what it might have been without our aid, should be a source of gratification to every member of the Craft.

The Home was opened twenty-nine years ago last Sunday, during which period 485 children have been cared for, and not one has been lost by death, remarkable testimony to the watchfulness and care over them by those to whom their care has been entrusted by the Craft, and especially to R.. W.'. WILLIAM J. WILEY and MRS. WILEY, who have had during the fifteen years of their incumbency, the care of 423 of the 485 children.

In accord with the suggestions heretofore made by us we urge that consideration now be given to the enlargement of the powers of the Trustees to permit them in their discretion, where it can be done to better advantage than at the Home, to care for both adults

and children in the community in which they live. This has reference only to those who otherwise would under present regulations be admitted to the Home. At the rate our membership is increasing, with a corresponding rate of increase of misfortune, the facilities of the Home will soon become inadequate, which, without the suggested arrangement, will mean more buildings and greater expense of maintenance than will be necessary if this plan is adopted.

Fraternally submitted,

WILLIAM A. ROWAN, President;
JAMES T. SOMERS, Vice-President;
GEO. T. MONTGOMERY, Treasurer;
JOHN LLOYD THOMAS, Secretary;
