Mr. PRUYN, from the Standing Committee on the incorporation of colleges and academies, stated that the Secretary had submitted to the committee the revised papers of the Rutger's Female Seminary, asking for an alteration of their charter; that the committee had examined the same, and find them to conform to the directions of the Board at its meeting on the 8th instant. The com

mittee recommend that the alteration in the charter asked for be granted.

On motion, the recommendation of the committee was agreed to, and the alteration was ordered to be engrossed in such form as the committee on incorporations shall approve.

The Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mr. VAN DYCK, from the Standing Committee on the instruction of common school teachers, submitted a report of the Trustees of Oxford Academy, dated October 31, 1857, in regard to the instruction of four teachers during the term of said academy, ending March 21, 1857. The trustees ask that the Regents will authorize the payment of the tuition of these scholars, on the ground that in the class which was instructed during the year 1856, only twelve pupils were admitted by reason of a misunderstanding of the principal in regard to the terms of admission. The committee recommend that the report be accepted, and that the proper certificate be transmitted to the Comptroller.

An application from the Trustees of Cherry-Valley Academy, asking for power to increase their number, was read. The application states no reason for the increase, and no evidence is presented that the notice required by the ordinance has been published. The Secretary was directed to return the application for correction in the respects named.

The Board then adjourned to Monday next at 10 o'clock

The Secretary read a paper from Mr. BENEDICT, stating that the illness of his family would prevent his attending the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

A letter from Dr. LESTER KEEP, a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western district, of January 28, 1828, was read, stating that the diploma granted to him at that time is lost, and asking that a duplicate be granted. The letter is accompanied by an affidavit to the facts stated. After considering the same, it was, on motion,

Resolved, That the diplomas asked for be granted, under the seal of the University, signed by the Chancellor and attested by the Secretary.

Mr. PRUYN, from the Standing Committee on the incorporation of colleges and academies, reported that the committee have had under consideration an application of inhabitants of the town of Ticonderoga in the county of Essex, for the provisional charter of an academy at that place; that the same sets forth that subscriptions for its endowment have been obtained to the amount of twenty-five hundred dollars, as appears by a copy of the subscription list annexed; that at least ten per cent of the amount subscribed has been paid in, and the petitioners are subscribers for more than one-half of that amount. They therefore ask to be incorporated, under the name of the

TICONDEROGA ACADEMY.

The application is in all respects conformable to the ordinance of the Regents, and the committee therefore recommend that a provisional charter be granted as applied for.

The recommendation of the committee was unanimously agreed to.

The Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mr. VAN DYCK, from the Committee on the instruction of common school teachers, reported that the committee had examined the report of the Trustees of Sandlake Academy on the instruction of common school teachers, from which it appears that between the 22d of October 1856, and the 15th of September 1857, fourteen pupils were duly instructed as required by the ordinance of the Regents. The report is in due form, and entitles the academy to the tuition of the pupils reported, with the exception that it has been delayed beyond the time required. The excuse for the delay, stated by one of the trustees of the academy to the Secretary, in the opinion of the committee, warrants the appropriation, and it is hereby recommended.

The report of the committee was adopted, and it was ordered that the Comptroller be certified of the amount recommended. The Board then adjourned to Monday next at 10 o'clock.

The Secretary read a letter from WILLIAM JEFFREYS, Esquire, of Canandaigua, announcing the death of the Hon. JOHN GREIG, Vice-chancellor of the Board.

Mr. PRUYN presented the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted :

Resolved, That in the death of JOHN GREIG, the senior member of this Board, and for many years Vice-chancellor of the University, the Regents have lost an associate, who, by his many excellent qualities, by his high personal character, and by the interest he manifested in the discharge of his official duties and in the cause of education, had secured their warmest esteem, and the confidence and respect of all who knew him. While we regret the departure of such an associate, one who connected this Board with a generation almost all of whom have passed away, we feel thankful that he lived so long and so well; and that after his protracted illness, he was permitted to meet his end in peace. Resolved, That a copy of the foregoing resolution be transmitted by the Secretary to the widow of the deceased, with the expression of the deep sympathy of the members of this Board in her affliction. The Board then adjourned to Monday next at 10 o'clock. [M.R.U.]
