PREFACE.

HAVE AN AIM.

Better to strive and climb

And never reach the goal,
Than to drift along with time,

An aimless, worthless soul ;
Ay, better to climb and fall,

Or sow, though the yield be small,
Than to throw away day after day,

And never strive at all.

-Anon.

To my READERS,

It will be recollected by the gentlemen who subscribed to my work of Two Volumes, entitled “Going to Markets and Grammar Schools," which embraced a period of Forty Years, that it went far beyond the Midland Counties.

In this additional Volume, I have endeavoured to confine its contents to four of the Midland Counties, and trust that my subscribers will find this new compilation to be not unworthy of its predecessors.

GEORGE GRIFFITH.
