THE NATIONAL PROHIBITION LAW

Pt.2

MONDAY, APRIL 12, 1926

UNITED STATES SENATE,

SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY,

Washington, D. C. The subcommittee met at 10.05 a. m., in room 224, Senate Office Building, pursuant to adjournment on Saturday, April 10, 1926, Senator Thomas J. Walsh presiding.

Present: Senators Walsh (presiding), Harreld, and Reed of Missouri.

Senator HARRELD (presiding). We will now hear the witnesses. Mrs. Peabody.

Mrs. HENRY W. PEABODY. Shall we begin?

Senator HARRELD (presiding). At your pleasure; yes.

Mrs. PEABODY. Do you swear us?

Senator HARRELD (presiding). The rule is to swear the witnesses. I would like for the 65 witnesses to hold up your hands and be sworn at one time, so as to save time.

(Thereupon the 65 witnesses to be called and introduced by Mrs. Peabody were sworn by Senator Harreld.)

TESTIMONY OF MRS. HENRY W. PEABODY, CHAIRMAN OF THE WOMEN'S NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE, BEVERLY, MASS.

Senator HARRELD. Proceed, Mrs. Peabody. Give your name and residence and the positions you hold, to the committee.

Mrs. PEABODY. Mr. Chairman, my name is Mrs. Henry W. Peabody. I am chairman of the Women's National Law Enforcement Committee. Residence, Beverly, Mass.

I have the following list of women who have come here for this cause, representing first great interdenominational church organizations. I would like to read the list, for we shall not have the time, due to the lateness of the hour, to present all our witnesses. I would like to have them on record, as they represent not themselves, but great groups of women. I will read the list.

Mrs. E. H. Silverthorne, president Federation of Women's Board of Foreign Missions; national.

Mrs. F. W. Wilcox, New Jersey Council of Women for Home Missions; national.

Mrs. D. E. Waid, National Board of the Presbyterian Church, New York.

Mrs. Robert E. Speer, representing the National Y. W. C. A.
