Hotspur. Nor shall it, Harry; for the hour is come
To end the one of us; and would to God

Thy name in arms were now as great as mine!
Prince. I'll make it greater ere I part from thee.

[They fight.]

Enter Falstaff [R.].

Falstaff. Well said, Hal! to it, Hal!

Reënter Douglas [R.]; he fights with Falstaff, who falls down as if he were killed. Douglas leaves [R.].

Hotspur is wounded, and falls.

Hotspur. O, Harry, thou hast robbed me of my youth!
Those proud titles

Thou hast won of me

Wound my thoughts worse than thy sword my flesh.

O, I could prophesy, but that the cold hand of death
Lies on my tongue.-

Percy, thou art dust.

He dies.

Prince. Fare thee well, great heart!

When that this body did contain a spirit,

A kingdom for it was too small a bound;

But now two paces1 of the vilest earth

Is room enough. This earth that bears thee dead
Bears not alive so brave a gentleman.

Adieu,

And take thy praise with thee to heaven!

He spies Falstaff on the ground.

What, old acquaintance! could not all this flesh
Keep in a little life? Poor Jack, farewell!
I could have better spared a better man.
O, I should have a heavy miss of thee,
If I were much in love with vanity!

1 two paces: the length of a grave.

He takes up Hotspur on his back.

The Prince of Wales reënters with his brother, Lord John of Lancaster.

Lancaster. Soft! whom have we here?

Did you not tell me this fat man was dead?

Prince. I did; I saw him dead. Art thou alive?

Falstaff. There is Percy. [Throwing the body down.] If your father will do me any honor, so; if not, let him kill the next Percy himself.

Prince. Why, Percy I killed myself, and saw thee dead. Falstaff. Didst thou? Lord, Lord, how this world is given

The trumpet sounds retreat; the day is ours.

Come, brother, let us to the highest of the field,
To see what friends are living, who are dead.

A moment's pause; the light grows clearer and it becomes broad day.

The trumpets sound and there appear the King, Prince of Wales, and Lord John of Lancaster, with Worcester and Vernon prisoners [R.]. King. Take Worcester to the death and Vernon too.

[Exeunt Worcester and Vernon R. guarded.]

Prince. The noble Scot, Lord Douglas, when he saw
The fortune of the day quite turned from him,
The noble Percy slain, and all his men
Upon the foot of fear, fled with the rest;
And falling from a crag, he was so bruised
That the pursuers took him. Your Grace,
May I dispose of him?

King.

With all my heart.

Prince. Then, brother John of Lancaster,

Go to the Douglas, and deliver him
Ransomless and free.

[Exit Lancaster R.]

King. Myself and you, son Harry, will toward Wales,
To fight with Glendower and Mortimer.
Rebellion in this land shall lose its sway
Meeting the check of such another day.

[Exeunt.]
