THE PRESENT EDITION.

HAVING now arrived, by the favour of the Public, to the fixth Edition of this work, it seems no longer either neceffary or decorous to withhold fuch of those honourable teftimonies of approbation as have come within the Author's knowledge, and which, from time to time, have gratified his private feelings, and confirmed the general function.

What, in the first inftance, might have been imputed to a vain attempt to prejudge Public Opinion, may, it is hoped, in the fixth, be received as an additional fuffrage: For both which, the Author feels himfelf doubly indebted-fince he derives no lefs happiness from the pleasure he must thus have communicated to others, than from the welcome praife that has been conferred upon himself.

SONNET

TO MR. PRATT,

On a Mental Review of his various Works.

WITH thee, fweet Bard! I've felt th' extatic glow Awak'd by "SYMPATHY," and trac'd her laws; “HUMANITY"* has taught my tears to flow; "BENEVOLENCE"* has urg'd the " POOR"* man's caufe.

Led by the magic of thy fertile mind,

Through fields of fancy have I lov❜d to stray, Now wept fictitious woes-to gloom refign'd,

Now caught Mirth's transport, from thy colouring gay.

To every touch my heart refponfive beat,

And own'd a master's hand, and felt his powers complete.

But not, DEAR GLEANER, to thy genius bright,

Alone, I pour this tributary ftrain;—

Oft has thy converfe cheer'd dejectious night—

Thy friendly balm reliev'd severest pain.

WI MAVOR, LL. D.

The Authors several Poems of " Sympathy, Humanity, Benevolence, and the Poor."
