(1887) Ꮴ W 23 GUN 1940 THE favor with which the first edition of this work was rece ved, has induced the author and the publishers to believe that the second might meet with approval from those for whose use it is intended. This edition was rendered necessary by the general revision of the statutes lately completed. Without a careful examination and comparison with former laws, it is difficult for one to appreciate the numerous changes in the statutes relating to township affairs made by the codifying commission or the legislature. So many and important were these that it became necessary to entirely rewrite more than one-half the book. All of it, including the forms and notes of decisions, has been carefully revised to assure conformity with the existing law. To Mr. Florien Giauque I am indebted for the careful and thorough revision of the chapters relating to roads, and also for many notes of recent decisions. His skill and fidelity will doubtless be appreciated by the readers-to whose kindly consideration I again commit the work. Explanation. In the following pages I have attempted to summarize and present, in simple and compact form, the law of this State relating to townships. As the book is primarily intended for nonprofessional readers, it was thought the better plan to present the substance of the statutes, rather than to insert them entire; but references are always given, so that the statutes may be consulted, if desired. Although the wants of the class of readers indicated have been kept steadily in view, yet I am not without hope that the work may prove useful to the members of the bar, and I have therefore cited, in their proper connection, the decisions of the Supreme Court bearing on the respective topics. There being little or no logical connection between a majority of the subjects treated, the alphabetical arrangement has been adopted as the best for purposes of reference. I have endeavored to prepare a book that will be of practical use to all those interested in the administration of township affairs, and if it should turn out to be such, my object will have been accomplished.
