knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.

23 And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister, or come unto him.

24 And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.

25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

26 He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

27 But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

CHAPTER XXV.

NOW when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cesarea to Jerusalem.

2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews imformed him against Paul, and besought him,

3 And desired favor against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.

தைக் குறித்து அதிக விபரமாய் அறிந்த பின்பு சேனாதிபதியா கிய லீசியா வரும்பொழுது நான் உங்கள் காரியத்தைக் கெட்டி யாய் விசாரித்துக்கொள்வேனென்று சொல்லி அவர்களை அனு ப்பி,

உங பின்பு பவுலுவைக் காத்துக்கொள்ளும்படிக்கும் அவ னுக்கு கண்டிப்புச் செய்யாதபடிக்கும் அவனுடைய மனிதர் களில் ஒருவனாகிலுங் அவனிடத்திற் போய் அவனுக்கு ஊழி யஞ் செய்வதற்குத் தடைபண்ணாதபடிக்குந் தலைவனுக்குக் க ட்டளையிட்டான்.

உச சிலநாளைக்குப் பின்பு பெலீக்குசு யூதஸ்திரியாகிய தன் மனைவி துருசில்லாளுடனே கூட வந்து பவுலுவை அழைப்பி த்துக் கிறிஸ்துவைப் பற்றும் விசுவாசத்தைக் குறித்து அவன்

சொல்லக் கேட்டான்.

உரு அந்தப்படி அவன் நீதியையும் இச்சையடக்கத்தையும் பின் வரும் நியாயத்தீர்ப்பையுங் குறித்துப் பேசிக்கொள்ளுகை யிற் பெலீக்குசு பயமடைந்து இப்பொழுது நீ போகலாம். இ னிமேல் எனக்குச் சாவகாசம் இருக்கும்பொழுது உன்னை மறு படியும் அழைப்பிப்பேன் என்றான்.

உக மேலுங் அவன் பவுலுவை விடுதலைபண்ணும்படியாய் த் தனக்கு அவன் பணங் கொடுப்பான் என்று நம்பிக்கையாய் இருந்தான். அதினிமித்தமே அவன் அநேகந்தரம் அவனை அழைப்பித்து அவனுடனே பேசிக்கொண்டான்.

உஎ இரண்டு வருஷமானபொழுது பெலீக்குசுக்குப் பதிலா கப் போர்க்கியுபெஸ்து என்னுந்துரை வந்தான்.அப்பொழுது பெலீக்குசு யூதர்களுக்குச் சந்தோஷஞ்செய்ய மனதாய்ப் பவு லுவைக் காவலில் வைத்து விட்டுப் போனான்.

உரு. அதிகாரம்.

க பெஸ்து என்பவன் துரைத்தனத்திற்கு வந்து மூன்று நா ளுக்குப் பின்பு சேசாரியா பட்டினத்திலிருந்து எருசலேமுக் குப் போனான்.

உ அப்பொழுது பிரதான ஆசாரியனும் யூதருடைய பெரி யோர்களும் அவனிடத்திற் சேர்ந்து பவுலுவுக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் பிராதுபண்ணி,

ங அவனை வழியிலே கொலைசெய்ய இரகசியமான யோச னை உள்ளவர்களாய் நீர் கிருபைசெய்து அவனை எருசலேமுக்கு

4 But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.

5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment-seat, commanded Paul to be brought.

7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous com. plaints against Paul, which they could not prove;

8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cesar have I offended any thing at all.

9 But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judg ed of these things before me?

10 Then said Paul, I stand at Cesar's judgment-seat, where I ought to be judged to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing wor thy of death, I refuse not to die but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cesar.

12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cesar? unto Cesar shalt thou go.

13 And after certain days, king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cesarea, to salute Festus.

ரு நானுஞ் சீக்கிரமாக அங்கே போவேன். ஆதலால் உங் களில் திறமுள்ளவர்கள் கூட வந்து அந்த மனிதனிடத்திற் கு ற்றமுண்டானால் அதை அவன் மேற் சாற்றுவார்களாகவென் றான்.

சு பின்பு அவன் ஒரெட்டுப் பத்துநாள் அவர்களிடத்துக்குச் சஞ்சரித்த பின்பு சேசாரியா பட்டினத்திற்குப் போய் மறு நா ளிலே நியாயாசனத்தில் உளுக்கார்ந்து பவுலுவைக் கொண்டுவ ரச் சொன்னான்.

எ அவன் வந்தபொழுது எருசலேமிலிருந்து வந்த யூதர்கள் சுற்ற நின்று அநேகமான குற்றங்களைப் பவுலுவின்மேற் சாற்றி னார்கள். அவைகளை அவர்கள் மெய்ப்படுத்தத் திராணியிருக்க

வில்லை.

அ பின்பு பவுல் சொன்னது, நான் யூதருடைய வேதநூலு க்காகிலும் தேவாலயத்திற்காகிலும் இராயருக்காகிலும் விரோத மாய் ஒரு குற்றமுஞ் செய்யவில்லையென்றான்.

கூ அப்பொழுது பெஸ்து யூதர்களுக்குத் தயவுசெய்ய மன தாய்ப் பவுலுவுடனே சொன்னது, நீ எருசலேமுக்குப் போய் அங்கே என்னாலே இந்தக்காரியங்களைக் குறித்து நியாயத்தீர்ப் படைய மனதிருக்கிறதா என்றான்?

ய அதற்குப் பவுல் சொன்னது, இராயனுடைய நியாயாச னத்திற்கு முன்பாக நிற்கிறேன். அதற்கு முன்பாக நான் நி யாயத்தீர்ப்படைய வேண்டும். யூதருக்கு நான் ஒரு அநியா யமுஞ் செய்யவில்லை. அதை நீரும் நன்றாய் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர். யக அநியாயமானதையாவது மரணத்திற்குப் பாத்திரமான தையாவது நான் நடப்பித்தேனானால் நான் சாகிறதற்கு மறுக்க மாட்டேன். இவர்கள் என்மேற சாற்றுகிற குற்றங்கள் எல்லா ம் வீணாயிருக்கிறபடியால் ஒருவரும் என்னை அவர்களுக்குச்சந் தோஷமாக ஒப்புக் கொடுக்கக் கூடாது. இராயருக்கே அபய மிடுகிறேன் என்றான்.

யஉ அப்பொழுது பெஸ்து தன் ஆலோசனைக்காரருடனே பேசிக்கொண்டு நீ இராயருக்கு அபயமிட்டாய். இராயரிடத் திற்கே போவாயென்று உத்தரவு சொன்னான்.

யங சிலநாட் சென்ற பின்பு இராசனாகிய அகிரிப்பாவும் பேர்னிக்கேயாளும் பெஸ்துவை வாழ்த்தும்படிக்குச் சேசாரி யா பட்டினத்திற்குப் போனார்கள்.

யச அங்கே அவர்கள் அனேகநாட் சஞ்சரித்திருக்கையிற்

clared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:

15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judg ment against him.

16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have license to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.

17 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment-seat, and commandec the man to be brought forth;

18 Against whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:

19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judg ed of these matters.

21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Agustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cesar.

22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To-morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.

23 And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains and principal men of
