41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the fore part stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

42 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest of them should swim out, and escape.

43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose, and commanded that they which could swim, should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

CHAPTER XXVIII.

AND when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.

2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, no doubt this man is at murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet ven. geance suffereth not to live.

5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. 6 Howbeit, they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while and no harm came to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of

சக இருபுறமுங் கடலுள்ள ஓரிடத்திலே சென்று கப்பல் தட்டிற்று. அதின் முன்பக்கம் அசையாமல் ஊன்றியிருந்தது. பின்பக்கம் அலைகளின் பலத்தினாலே உடைந்து போயிற்று. சஉ அப்பொழுது காவலில் இருந்தவர்களில் ஒருவனும் நீந் தி ஓடிப்போகாதபடிக்கு அவர்களைக் கொலைசெய்ய வேண்டு மென்று போர்ச் சேவகர் யோசனையாயிருந்தார்கள்.

சங அவர்களுடைய தலைவன் பவுலுவைக் காப்பாற்ற மன தாய் அவர்களுடைய யோசனையைத் தடுத்து நீந்தத் தக்கவர்க ள் முந்திக் கடலில் விழுந்து கரையேறவும்,

சுசு மற்றவர்களிற் சிலர் பலகைகளின்மேலுஞ் சிலர் கப்பல் துண்டுகள் மேலும் போய்க் கரையேறவுங் கட்டளையிட்டான். இவ்விதமாய் எல்லாருந் தப்பிக் கரைசேர்ந்தார்கள்.

க அவர்கள் தப்பிக் கரை சேர்ந்த பின்பு அந்தத் தீவின் பேர் மெலித்தாவென்று அறிந்தார்கள்.

உ அந்நியராகிய அந்தத் தீவார் எங்களுக்கு மிகுந்த அன் பைக் காண்பித்தார்கள். அவ்வேளையிலிருந்த மழைக்காகவுங் குளிர்ச்சிக்காகவும் அவர்கள் நெருப்பை உண்டுபண்ணி எங்க ளனைவரையுஞ் சேர்த்துக்கொண்டார்கள்.

ங அப்பொழுது பவுல் சில விறகுகளை வாரி அந்த நெருப் பின்மேற் போடுகையில் ஒரு விரியன் பாம்பு அனலினாலே பு றப்பட்டு அவனுடைய கையைச் சுற்றிக்கொண்டது.

ச தீவார் அந்தப் பொல்லாத பூச்சியை அவனுடைய கையி லே தொங்கக் கண்டபொழுது மெய்யாய் இந்த மனிதன் கொ லைபாதகன். இவன் சமுத்திரத்திற்குத் தப்பி வந்தும் பழியா னது இவனைப் பிழைக்க ஒட்டவில்லையென்று தங்களுக்குள் ளே சொல்லிக்கொண்டார்கள்.

ரு அவன் அந்தப் பூச்சியைத் தீயிலே உதறி ஒரு தீமையும் அடையாதிருந்தான்.

சு அவர்கள் இவன் வீக்கங்கொண்டு சடுதியாய் மரித்து வி ழுவானென்று காத்திருந்தார்கள். மிகுந்த காலம் அவர்கள் அ ப்படிக் காத்திருந்து சேதம் எவ்வளவும் அவனுக்கு வாராததை க் கண்டபொழுது அவர்கள் வேறு சிந்தையை அடைந்து அவ னைத் தேவனென்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டார்கள்.

எ மேலும் அவ்விடத்திற்குச் சமீபமாய் அந்தத் தீவுக்கு மு

the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever, and of a bloody-flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

9 So when this was done, others also which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

10 Who also honored us with many honors; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.

12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome.

15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum, and The Three Taverns ; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself, with a soldier that kept him.

17 And it came to pass, that after three days, Paul called the chief of the Jews together. And when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have com. mitted nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet

அ புபிலியினுடைய தகப்பன் சுரத்தோடுங் கழிச்சலோடுங் கிடந்தான்.பவுல் அவனிடத்திற் போய்ச் செபம்பண்ணி அ வன் மேலே தன் கைகளை வைத்து அவனைக் குணமாக்கினான்.

கூ அப்படி நடந்த பொழுது தீவிலே இருந்த மற்ற வியாதிக் காரரும் வந்து குணமாக்கப்பட்டார்கள்.

ய அவர்கள் எங்களை மிகவுங் கனஞ்செய்து நாங்கள் கப்பல் ஏறின பொழுது எங்களுக்கு வேண்டியவைகளை ஏற்றினார்கள்.

யக மூன்று மாதஞ் சென்ற பின்பு தீவிலே மழைகாலத்தி ற்குத் தங்கியிருந்த மிதுனமென்னும் அடையாளமுள்ள அலே க்குசந்தரியப் பட்டினத்துக் கப்பலிலே நாங்கள் ஏறிப் புறப் பட்டுப் போய்,

யஉ சீர்க்கூசை பட்டினத்தைச் சேர்ந்து அங்கே மூன்று நா ள் தங்கி,

யங பின்பு அவ்விடம் விட்டு (சிசிலதீவை) சுற்றி ஓடி இ ரேகியு பட்டினத்திற் சேர்ந்து ஒருநாளுக்குப் பின் தென்றற்கா ற்றெடுக்கையில் இரண்டாம் நாளிலே புத்தேயோலி பட்டினத் திற்குப் போய்,

யச அங்கே சகோதரரைக் கண்டோம். அவர்கள் ஏழுநாள் தங்களிடத்தில் இருக்கும்படி எங்களை வேண்டிக்கொண்டார்க ள். அந்தப்படி நாங்கள் (இருந்து) பின்பு உரோமை புரிக்கு ப் போனோம்.

யரு அவ்விடத்திலுள்ள சகோதரர் எங்கள் சங்கதிகளைக் கே ள்விப்பட்டுப் புறப்பட்டு (சிலர்) அப்பிய புரமென்னும் இடம் வரைக்குஞ் (சிலர்) மூன்று சத்திரமென்னும் இடம் வரைக்கும் எங்களுக்கு எதிர் கொண்டு வந்தார்கள். அவர்களைப் பவுல் க ண்டு பராபரனைத் தோத்திரஞ் செய்து திடன்கொண்டான்.

யசு உரோமை புரியில் நாங்கள் சேர்ந்த பொழுது சேனைத் தலைவன் தன் காவலிலிருந்தவர்களைச் சேனாதிபதிக்கு ஒப்புக் கொடுத்தான். அப்பொழுது பவுல் தன்னைக் காத்திருக்கும்ப டியான சேவகனுடனே கூடத் தனித்திருக்கும்படிக்கு உத்தர வு பெற்றுக்கொண்டான்.

யஎ மூன்றுநாளுக்குப் பின்பு பவுல் யூதரிற் பிரதானமானவர் களைக் கூடி வரவழைத்தான். அவர்கள் கூடி வந்திருந்தபொ ழுது அவன் அவர்களுடனே சொன்னதாவது, சகோதரர்களே, (நம்முடைய) சனங்களுக்காவது முன்னோர்களின் முறைமை

was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the

Romans:

18 Who when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar; not that I had aught to accuse my nation of.

20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

22 But we desire to hear of thee, what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging: to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive.
