II. Let us with a gladsome mind Praise the Lord, for He is kind! Grant that Light and Life Divine Long on England's shores may shine; Grant that People, Church, and Throne May in all good deeds be one: For Thy mercies aye endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.
1. Brightly gleams our banner, Pointing to the sky, Waving on Christ's soldiers To their home on high. Marching through the desert, Gladly thus we pray, Still, with hearts united,
Singing on our way:
Brightly gleams our banner,
Pointing to the sky,
Waving on Christ's soldiers To their home on high.
2. Jesu, Lord and Master, At Thy sacred Feet, Here, with hearts rejoicing, See Thy children meet. Often have we left Thee, Often gone astray, Keep us, Mighty Saviour, In the narrow way.
Brightly gleams our banner,
Pointing to the sky, Waving on Christ's soldiers To their home on high.
3. Pattern of our childhood, Once Thyself a child, Make our childhood holy Pure, and meek, and mild. In the hour of danger Whither can we flee, Save to Thee, our Saviour, Only unto Thee?
Brightly gleams our banner, Pointing to the sky,
Waving on Christ's soldiers To their home on high.
4. All our days direct us In the way we go;
Crown us still victorious Over every foe:
Bid Thine angels shield us When the storm-clouds lour; Pardon Thou and save us In the last dread hour.
Brightly gleams our banner, Pointing to the sky, Waving on Christ's soldiers To their home on high.
5. Then with saints and angels May we join above, Offering prayers and praises At Thy throne of love. When the march is over, Then come rest and peace; Jesus in His beauty; Songs that never cease.
Brightly gleams our banner, Pointing to the sky,
Waving on Christ's soldiers
To their home on high. Amen. Based on T. J. POTTER.
I. Forward! be our watchword,
Steps and voices joined;
Seek the things before us, Not a look behind;
Burns the fiery pillar
At our army's head; Who shall dream of shrinking, By our Captain led?
Forward through the desert, Through the toil and flight; Jordan flows before us, Sion beams with light.
2. Forward, when in childhood Buds the infant mind; All through youth and manhood, Not a thought behind; Speed through realms of Nature, Climb the steps of grace; Faint not, till in glory
Gleams our Father's face. Forward, all the life-time Climb from height to height: Till the head be hoary, Till the eve be light.
3. Forward, flock of Jesus, Salt of all the earth, Till each yearning purpose Spring to glorious birth; Sick, they ask for healing, Blind, they grope for day; Pour upon the nations Wisdom's loving ray.
Forward, out of error,
Leave behind the night; Forward through the darkness, Forward into light.
4. Glories upon glories
Hath our God prepared, By the souls that love Him One day to be shared ; Eye hath not beheld them, Ear hath never heard ; Nor of these hath uttered Thought or speech a word; Forward, marching eastward, Where the heaven is bright, Till the veil be lifted, Till our faith be sight.
5. Far o'er yon horizon
Rise the city towers, Where our God abideth,
That fair home is ours: Flash the streets with jasper, Shine the gates with gold: Flows the gladdening river Shedding joys untold.
Thither, onward thither, In the Spirit's might; Pilgrims to your country, Forward into light.
