Notaries in San Francisco limited to sixty. Page 296. Wm. and Wm. H. Hill, Assemblymen from Nevada County, are one and the same person. The name is simply William Hill. •J* * INTRODUCTORY. ^ It will be seen by reference to the law providing for this publication, * found on another page, that a larger edition of the State Blue Book, or 0 Roster, is authorized than by the previous law. The demand for the volume published two years ago was far in excess of the supply. It was my intention to include in this volume a list of all the officers of the National Government in California, with their salaries, etc., thus making it a complete roster of both the State and Federal Governments within the boundaries of the Commonwealth. With this addition it was thought the book would be more valuable for political reference. To lessen the labors of the heads of the Federal departments addressed, I caused to be copied lists of the officers and employes from National registers and mailed them to such heads, with stamped envelopes to return, requesting a correction of the lists. Some of the departments have courteously complied, while others have resorted to the proverbial red tape, and finally disapproved my request, while others have replied by silence. I am thus unable to meet the expectations of many friends who have been consulted, and who have expressed a wish to see the State Blue Book a complete roster for both governments in California. It was deemed best not to publish a fragment that the courtesy of some Federal officials had furnished, if every department could not be given complete.
