"It is not in my power, from any records of the corporation, or from any other source, to furnish an accurate list of the passengers, or other persons injured, or a statement of the amounts paid to each. It is, however, in my power to present an accurate statement, founded on a careful report by the treasurer of the corporation, of the whole amount paid and charged to loss account, in consequence of personal injuries of every description, from the 30th of June,

1840, to the end of 1847, and embracing nearly the whole amount so paid from the opening of the road in 1834, a period of 13 years. This statement includes damages for injuries suffered-payments and gratuities in behalf of sufferers from accidents of every description-payments for professional attendance and services-hospital expenses, and board of persons injured, and their attendants— funeral charges, and gratuities to families of sufferers, &c.-amounting in all to $44,938 28 paid to 88 persons. There is nothing in the records of the corporation (except subsequently to the act of 1846, requiring a report of accidents,) to show the class of sufferers, or the nature of their claims. The greater portion of the injuries were slight, and nearly all the severe cases arose from one or other of the four serious accidents above mentioned. Two of these accidents were inevitable-the other two were the result of culpable inattention to instructions.

Considerable sums have been paid in consequence of injuries sustained by persons employed by the corporation."
