There are several orchards and vineyards that yield a handsome income to the

Manufactures.-Grist mills, 6-water, 5, steam, 1. Saw mills, 10-steam, 3, water, 7; capacity per annum, 10,000,000 feet of lumber. Tanneries, 4; annual product, 12,000 sides. Lime manufactured per annum, 25,000 barrels.

Mineral Resources.-Gold is known to exist in this county throughout an area of twenty square miles. Up to the present period only a small yield has been obtained, not sufficient to remunerate those who have prospected in search of it. Quartz mills, 2. These mills are said to be profitable to the proprietors. Lime stone exists in large quantities.

COUNTY SEAT-SHASTA.

Shasta County, organized 1850. Boundaries: North by Siskiyou, east by Utah Territory and Plumas, south by Butte and Plumas and west by the Coast Range.

Topography.-A large amount of land in this county is well adapted for agricultural and grazing purposes. In the entire eastern, northern and western portions of the county, timber may be considered as inexhaustible. All the varieties peculiar to California, with, perhaps, the exception of redwood, are found in abundance, such as pitch, spruce and sugar pine, fir and cedar; there is also a species of live and water oak and ash. The mineral lands extend throughout a large portion of the mountainous districts, and mining is extensively and profitably carried on. Number of acres claimed for agricultural purposes, sixty-two thousand and seventy-nine; inclosed, twelve thousand and eighty; under cultivation, four thousand four hundred and forty.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, one hundred and eighty-five miles; from Stockton, two hundred and thirty-five miles, and from San Quentin, three hundred and fifteen miles.

Mineral Resources.-The mineral lands in this county, since the existence of gold therein was known, have been successfully worked by a large number of persons. There are several rich quartz leads in this county. Quartz mills, 5—water, 4, steam, 1; aggregate number of stamps, 20; cost of construction, $48,000. Copper and iron ore exist in considerable quantities, which is said to be very rich. Salt and sulphur springs, and several extensive beds of stone coal have been recently discovered, but, as yet, their value has not been tested.

Canals and Water Ditches.-Number of canals, 24; aggregate length, 104 miles; cost of construction, $300,000; in course of completion, length, 40

miles.

COUNTY SEAT-DOWNIEVILLE.

Sierra County, organized 1852. Boundaries: North by Plumas, east by Utah Territory, south by Nevada and west by Yuba.

Topography.-The entire surface of this county is composed of mineral land, and but a small portion thereof is adapted for agricultural purposes. A few small tracts in the vicinity of the rivers and creeks are cultivated for the raising of vegetables. The timber of the county is principally pine, with a little oak of an inferior quality. Number of acres in cultivation, five hundred and seventy-five.

Legal Distances.-From Sacramento, one hundred and ten miles; from Stockton, one hundred and fifty-five miles, and from San Quentin, two hundred and forty miles.

Mineral Resources.-Gold is found in every section of the county, and in great abundance. There are numerous expensive tunnels that have been opened at a cost of $500,000, which have yielded large sums to their owners. Quartz mills, 11; aggregate number of stamps, 30; cost of construction, $105,000. Limestone exists in considerable quantities. A marble quarry is being opened in the vicinity of Downieville.
