What regulations govern your employes in regard to these crossings? Engineers are required to ring the bell eighty rods from each crossing, and to keep the bell ringing until the crossing is passed.

What general conditions as to approaches, grades, planking, and signs are necessary,

in your opinion, for crossings of railroads and public highways, to insure a proper degree of safety?

Approaches should be in good condition, with good plank crossing. Signs are of but little, if any protection, at crossings. A person that did not hear or see the train would not be likely to see a sign, but we have signs according to statute, at all crossings.

How many miles of iron rail, and how many of steel have you in use, and what is their relative durability, practicability of use, and value as used on your road? 64.8 miles iron rail; no steel rail.

Weight of iron or steel rail respectively per yard of track?

Rail, 50 lbs. to the yard, or 100 lbs. per yard of track.

American Express Company. on all packages weighing over.

They pay about one and one-half first-class rates
Smaller packages are free of charge. Freight

delivered to their own employes on board of train.

SLEEPING CARS.

Do sleeping or dining-room cars run on your road, and if so, on what terms are they run, by whom are they owned, and what charges are made in addition to the regular passenger rates?

Woodruff sleeper. Two dollars, Detroit to Indianapolis for each passenger; which amount goes to the sleeping car company as their pay, but not to be less than $20 per round trip for each car.

U. S. MAIL.

What is the compensation paid you by the U. S. Government for the transportation of its mails and on what terms of service?

Forty dollars per mile per year.
