The Marshall & Coldwater Railroad is located from the city of Coldwater, in Branch county, to the village of Elm Hall, in Gratiot county. The condition of the work in course of construction is such that it will be difficult to comply with the request of the Commissioner, by answering definitely the questions proposed. That portion of the line from Coldwater to the Peninsular Railway, a distance of forty miles, was, on the first of January 1873, substantially graded, bridged, and tied, but little remaining to be done to complete it, ready for ironing. The line of road commences at Copper Harbor, Mich.; thence, following the general direction of the mineral range, southwesterly to some point on the Ontonagon River, a distance, as near as may be, of one hundred miles. Gauge of road, three feet. The division from Hancock, Mich., to Calumet, is under process of construction,a distance of twelve and one-half miles. On December 31st, 1872, about five and a-half miles of road, on division from Hancock to Calumet, were graded. This division of twelve and one-half miles will be in operation on or before October 1st, 1873. |
