Mr. Gibson moved that the bill entitled "An act to create a Metropolitan Harbor District, and a board' of piers and wharves therein," be made the special order for Friday, after the third reading of bills.

Mr. O'Donnell offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That the State Engineer and Surveyor be requested to inform the Senate what number of miles of railroad have been built during the past five years in the State of New York operated by steam.

The President put the question whether the Senate would agree to said resolution, and it was decided in the affirmative.

Mr. Wood offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That it be referred to the finance committee of the Senate, with instructions to report forthwith, a bill appropriating the sum of fifty thousand dollars for the relief of the destitute people of the Southern States.

Mr. Gibson moved to amend by striking out "with instructions to report," and insert "to consider the propriety of reporting."

Resolved, That the Comptroller be requested to report to the Senate, at the earliest day practicable, the amount of all claims for canal dam ages, so called, exclusive of damages for lands taken for the original construction and for the enlargement of canals, which have been paid by the State since the opening of the Erie canal, stating the name of each claimant, the amount paid such claimant, the canal on which the damages were alleged to have occurred, and the dates of payment of such damages, together with the amounts of extra compensation On allowances paid to contractors on the canals since the opening of, the said Erie canal.
