On July 1st, 1914, the Railroad Commission of South Carolina adopted the Interstate Commerce Commission's zone-block and sub-block system of express rates and classifications in respect to intrastate traffic between points in South Carolina. This system simplifies the rate structure and makes the classification uniform. Certain modifications were made to the Interstate Commerce Commission's system advantageous to the shippers of South Carolina, especially in natural products, food stuffs, etc. The classification of express matter is divided into two classes: First class and second class. All articles of food are embraced in second class. The first class rates are the basis of all rates and the second class rates are seventy-five per cent. (75%) of the first class rates, except on certain commodities where this rate has been modified for intra-State traffic in South Carolina. The modifications to the above, as adopted by this Commission, are as follows: The minimum first class rate is 50 cents per hundred pounds. SECTION 1. Rate on the following commodities is sixty per cent. (60%) of the first class rate, viz.: Ginger Ale, Coca-Cola, Pep-to-Lac, Pop, Soda Water and other similar aerated and carbonated beverages. Empty carriers to be returned at ten cents each when the outbound shipments are forwarded by express. Note-Coca-Cola, Pep-to-Lac, Pop, Soda Water and other similar aerated or carbonated beverages, in cases containing six dozen short pints, charge for 125 pounds per case. Cabbage-Rate is fifty per cent. (50%) of the first-class rate. |
